TRAVERSE CITY — Rivals TC Central and TC West will meet on the volleyball court for the first time this year, in the highlight of what's ahead this week in northern Michigan prep sports.
The Titans will host the Trojans on Wednesday in a Big North Conference tilt. Last year, West won all three meetings, including a victory in the district opener.
"We're really excited to see them and how their new coach has developed and changed their program," TC Central coach Katherine Brege said. "It's always a great matchup. We bring out the best in each other."
While Emily Baumann is in her first year back with TC West, she's all too familiar with the rivalry. She previously coached the Titans in 2007, and also faced Central as a player before graduating in 2001.
Here's a look at some of the other big events this week.
MORE VOLLEYBALL
n Forest Area will travel to Onaway on Tuesday for a big Ski Valley Conference showdown. The Cardinals are currently ranked No. 5 in Class D.
n On Thursday, St. Francis will host Charlevoix in Lake Michigan Conference action. The Gladiators are off to a hot start this year with a 21-4-3 record. They're also 3-0 in the conference. Charlevoix is 2-1 in the league, but is the defending LMC champs.
CROSS COUNTRY
n Big North Conference runners will head to TC West on Wednesday for the first league meet. Last year, the Titans won the boys title while the Trojans were the girls champ.
TENNIS
n In a unique event, the Leelanau Co. tennis team will host the Leelanau Clay Court Invite on Thursday at The Homestead.
SOCCER
n It will be a busy week for soccer in Leelanau Co. Suttons Bay hosts Leland today and Elk Rapids on Wednesday. The Comets will stay in the county and play at Northport on Wednesday. Glen Lake will take on visiting TC Christian on Thursday.
GOLF
n TC Central will play its final home match on Friday when the Trojans host their own invitational at the Traverse City Country Club.
FOOTBALL
n Cadillac will visit TC West on Friday with first place in the Big North Conference on the line. Both teams are 2-0 in the league, along with TC Central, which is at Ogemaw Heights.
n St. Francis will host Boyne City on Saturday for homecoming. The Gladiators are 2-2 and coming off a 28-20 loss at Grayling. The Ramblers are 4-0 for the first time since 2008.
