TRAVERSE CITY — Boyne City opened the third quarter Tuesday on a 7-0 run to cut the St. Francis lead to single digits.
From that point, it was all Gladiators.
St. Francis closed the game on a 30-13 run for a 78-52 Lake Michigan Conference win over the Ramblers.
"I was pleased," Glads coach Keith Haske said. "We played well. We had that little lull to start the third quarter when they came out in a 2-3 zone. We didn't attack that very well. But we got it going again and I was pleased with our effort."
The Gladiators — ranked No. 2 in Class C — moved to 14-0 with the win and 9-0 in the league. Boyne City fell to 6-7 and 3-6 in the league.
It was 61-45 St. Francis after three quarters before the Glads opened the fourth with a 10-0 run in the first two minutes. Austin Currie opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer to get the run going.
"As a senior coming off the bench, I have the experience to know what's going on and jump in," Currie said. "Having that experience, I know my job is to hustle and do what I can on defense. I know I can shoot the ball and coach has given me confidence with the green light. So whenever I can make a spark, I do my best to do that."
Currie finished with eight points and three assists.
"He's a little bit like Michael Jenkins was last year for us," Haske said. "He comes in and he either keeps the game going or he adds a little bit. Tonight I thought he did a great job of hitting some shots, handling the ball and giving Damon a break. He's been playing well all year."
Byron Bullough led St. Francis with 19 points — all in the first three quarters.
"He's a great athlete and has a great shot," Currie said. "He's putting up major points in every game. He definitely looks to score, so we look to get him the ball when he's hot, which he's been the last few games."
Damon Sheehy had 13 points and eight assists, Kody Kleinrichert had 11 points and eight rebounds while Connor Archer added 10 points.
As a team, St. Francis had 18 assists.
"We've been doing that most of the year," Haske said. "Our kids are pretty unselfish. I thought Damon played great. He got us going in the first half and made great decisions with the ball."
"As a team, we look to distribute," Currie said. "Damon leads us with that as our distributor. We look to make that extra pass. And it's really the reason why we're scoring more points now than ever."
The Ramblers had 16 points from Brad Fouchia, 14 points from Corey Redman, 10 points from Ryan Carson and seven from Maceo Vroman.
Redman left the game midway through the third quarter with a back injury. He briefly went to the locker room before returning to the bench, but didn't go back in the game.
Joe Coats scored 18 points as the St. Francis freshman defeated Boyne City 49-47 in overtime.
