Softball Roundup: Devils clinch title

East Jordan took the nightcap 9-2 at Elk Rapids on Tuesday to clinch the Lake Michigan Conference softball title.

Shaina Peters was the winning pitcher for the Red Devils and also had a single and two doubles.

The Elks (18-13) won the opener 3-2. East Jordan led 2-1 in the sixth inning, but Elk Rapids rallied for the win as Sarah Otte scored on a Jessica Jennings fielder's choice and Kacey Anderson scored on Stephanie Niepoth's walk-off single to center field.

Jessie Spoor pitched the win with eight strikeouts.

St. Francis 3 1
Boyne City 0 6

Boyne City came back for a 6-1 win in the nightcap and a Lake Michigan Conference split with Traverse City St. Francis.

The Gladiators (18-12, 9-5 LMC) won the opener 3-0 as Amy Brunner pitched a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts.

Cheyenne Shumaker pitched the nightcap for the Ramblers while Shelby Mittig had a double and scored a run.

Glen Lake 21 11
Suttons Bay 5 0

Glen Lake clinched a share of the Northwest Conference softball title with 21-5 and 11-0 wins over Suttons Bay.

The Lakers travel to Kingsley on Friday. The Stags are in second place, two games back, and need a sweep to force a tie.

Kayley Pleva struck out five in pitching Glen Lake (16-14-1, 10-1-1) to the 21-5 win. Mariah Sobczak and Kristen Pleva wielded the big sticks. Both had three hits and scored four runs. Pleva hit a two-run inside-the-park home run. Hanna Therrien added two hits and three RBIs. Paige Picard and Lauren O'Brien scored two runs while Katie Drzewiecki contributed a two-run triple.

Laureen Schmidt and Keeley Forrester had two hits for Suttons Bay.

Pleva duplicated her feat with a two-run inside-the-park home run in the 11-0 nightcap. O'Brien threw a four-hit shutout. O'Brien, Therrien, Picard and Devin Kelly pounded out two hits. Kelly had a double, triple and three RBIs.

Kingsley 27 11
Buckley 4 2

Kingsley swept Buckley 27-4 and 11-2 to improve to 8-3-1 in the Northwest Conference race.

The Stags were led by two hits each from Kaytlin Schramm, Kerri Kelly and Katie Nickerson, but lost Lexie Benton to a fractured tibia. Kelly earned the win.

Jessie Johnson picked up the nightcap win and was 2-for-2 at the plate. Michaela Lehn had two hits, including a triple.

Benzie Central 5 7
Mesick 2 2

Adriane Kline pitched Benzie Central to a 5-2, 7-2 Northwest Conference sweep of Mesick.

Kline threw a two-hitter in the opener for the Huskies (12-14, 7-5 NWC) with nine strikeouts. Alyssa Smith had two hits at the plate.

In the nightcap, Kline pitched the win and also had a single and a double. Smith had two hits while Gail Newberg hit twice and drove in two runs.

St. Francis JV 9 11
Boyne City JV 0 7

Emily Walters pitched two wins as St. Francis' JV rolled to a 9-0, 11-7 sweep of Boyne City.

Walters threw a no-hitter in the opener with 14 strikeouts. Sydni Zamarron, Carly Madison and Walters each had two hits for the Gladiators (23-3).

In the nightcap, Colleen Roddy and Walters had three hits, while Walters tallied two triples. Zamarron and Madison each hit twice.
