Softball Roundup: Glads capture district

MAPLE CITY -- Traverse City St. Francis moved on to regional play with a 14-1 win over host Glen Lake in the Division 4 district softball championship here.

The Gladiators (20-12) will return to Glen Lake next week for regional action.

In the title game, Amy Brunner pitched the win with four hits and six strikeouts. Heather Larsen was 3-for-3, Ellen Kendziorski and Sarah Brunner each had two hits while Kelly Day had a bases-loaded double.

St. Francis also had a 5-0 semifinal win over Leland as Sarah Brunner tossed a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts. Kendziorski and Colleen Roddy each had two hits while Amy Brunner and Emily Buckel each had a triple.

Glen Lake (20-15-2) earned a 12-4 win over Lake Leelanau St. Mary's in the semifinal as Kaley Pleva pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts. Nancy Binsfield had four hits and three RBIs.

In the title game, the Lakers had two hits from Lauren O'Brien while Kristen Pleva scored the team's lone run.

DIVISION 1

Alpena downs TC West for district crown

Alpena earned a 4-3 win over Traverse City West to claim the Division 1 district championship.

In the title game, the Titans (24-14) had a two-run hit from Laura Cizek while Rachel Barnes, Alison Friar and Katelynn Kirkey each scored a run.

West beat Marquette 8-7 in the semifinal as Kate Colmus had two hits, three RBIs and added the game-winning hit. Sarah Goudey had two hits and three runs scored, Barnes doubled and Lauren Bilinski pitched the three-hit win.

DIVISION 3

Blazers keep district streak intact

Kalkaska won its sixth softball district in a row with a 6-1 win over Mancelona in the final at Kingsley.

Jen Spann pitched a seven-hitter, striking nine, in the championship game.

Maria Harbour and Kara Ponstein led the attack with two hits. Ponstein drove in a run. Kristi Peters drove in two. Kacy Huddleston added a hit and RBI.

The Blazers (28-10) advanced with an 11-1 win over Suttons Bay. Spann and Jamie Myas combined on a one-hitter. Myas also contributed two hits and an RBI. Huddleston chipped in two hits and two RBIs and Spann one hits and two RBIs. Ponstein contributed a hit, three walks and an RBI.

Kalkaska will play in the regional at Mancelona.

DIVISION 4

Frankfort gets revenge in district finale

After losing a 4-3 decision to Manistee Catholic Central last year, Frankfort returned the favor Saturday.

The Panthers beat the Sabers 9-3 for the Division 4 district title.

Frankfort (26-11-2) was down 2-0 in the fifth inning before posting five runs in the frame and four more in the sixth. Paige Banktson had three hits while Laney Eubank and Kirstin Kidder each had two.

In a 12-6 semifinal win over Onekama, Eubank hit a grand slam in a five-run sixth inning as the Panthers once again rallied from a fifth-inning deficit. Kristy Boomer and Mindy Smith each had two hits in the contest.

Eubank pitched both wins, finishing the day with 17 strikeouts.
