Elks lose in shootout

West Michigan Christian ties it late on penalty kick

ELK RAPIDS — Muskegon West Michigan Christian won its second 2-1 shootout game in three days Thursday to capture the Division IV soccer regional here over the host Elks.

The Warriors downed Glen Lake by the same score Tuesday.

Elk Rapids (16-5-2) scored just over 10 minutes into the game on a Megan Gregorski goal. Mylia LaPointe assisted.

That lead stood until late when West Michigan Christian's Alexys Riksen tied it on a penalty kick. That came with eight minutes left.

Neither team could score in overtime, but the Warriors (18-3-2) converted all five of their shots in the shootout. The Elks connected on four of five.

"Our girls came to play," Elks coach Andrea Krakow said. "We went out there to win and it showed. I felt we controlled a lot of the play. Unfortunately, that (penalty kick call) was a tough break."

Officials ruled that West Michigan Christian's Kati South was fouled in the goal box. Riksen took the penalty shot and buried it to tie the contest.

Maggie Marshall stopped 24 shots for the Elks.

West Michigan Christian junior keeper Courtne Stuk stopped 19 shots. Her biggest save was in the shootout when she stopped the third Elk Rapids shooter.

Krakow will lose six seniors, four who were starters.

The Elks reached the regional semifinals a year ago in Division III before losing to Ludington.

The Warriors, meanwhile, will take on Calvin Christian next Wednesday in a semifinal. Calvin Christian beat Kalamazoo Christian 7-2 for its regional title.
