Titans win D-1 golf regional

Titans win by 15 shots, Eagles by 12

LAKE ORION — After a year absence, Traverse City West's golf team is heading back to the Division 1 state finals.

The Titans made sure of it in convincing fashion Thursday, winning their regional by 15 shots.

"That made it a little easier, because you never know just sitting there," West coach Mike Schultz said. "We were in a similar situation at East Lansing where we were the leader in the clubhouse, until the final group came through."

TC West won with a 293 at Boulder Pointe. The Titans were followed by Grand Blanc at 308 and Midland Dow at 314.

The top three teams and top three individuals from non-qualifying teams advance to next week's state finals at Grand Valley State.

"I haven't seen it since playing there in college for Ferris State," Schultz said. "It's going to be pretty new to most of us. But we'll head down on Thursday and play a practice round."

The Titans, the No. 4 team in the current rankings, were paced by senior Gates Muller, who was individual medalist on Thursday. He shot a 2-under 70, which included an eagle and three birdies. Payden Myers tied for second with a 72, Brady Greenman had a 73 and Andrew Hartman shot a 78.

TC Central finished 11th with a 343.

The Trojans were led by Winton Munch's 78, Nikolaj Brons-Piche's 84, Trey Pezzetti's 87 and freshman Danny Brott's 94.

In Division 3 at Ludington, Kingsley senior Josh Lueck qualified as an individual. He parred his last three holes to finish with an 83.

Senior Paul Bardenhagen and freshman Joel Sneed each shot a 74 to share medalist honors as Lake Leelanau St. Mary captured the Division IV regional title by 12 strokes at River's Edge Golf Course in Alpena.

The Eagles fired a 314. Suttons Bay was second with a 326 and Frankfort third with a 345. All three teams advance to the state finals next weekend at Michigan State's Forest Akers West golf course.

Junior Ian Duvall carded an 82 and senior Joe Pendergast 84 for St. Mary.

For Suttons Bay, Devin Capron came in at 79, Sean Lammy and Brent Duddles at 81 and Eric Chapman at 85.

Jordan O'Connel's 80 topped Frankfort. Joey Nugent and Zach Terwilliger shot 84 and T.J. Darling 97.

Glen Lake's Michael O'Brien qualified as an individual with a 78.
