JOHANNESBURG — Kari Borowiak and Karli Jacob did all the scoring in the third quarter as Gaylord St. Mary pulled away from Johannesburg-Lewiston in a Ski Valley Conference showdown.
The league's top two teams were separated by just two points at halftime before Jacob scored nine points and Borowiak 13 in the third quarter alone. The pair accounted for all 22 Snowbird points and built up a 45-27 lead going into the final stanza.
Borowiak — who hit three 3-pointers in the third-quarter — ended the game with 25 points, while Jacob had 12 points, 11 rebounds and six steals.
Christina Smith and Borowiak combined to stymie Joburg standout Abby Schlicher, who was held scoreless.
Katelyn Weaver led the Cardinals (11-2, 8-2 SVC) with nine points and eight rebounds, while Brittany Cherwinski had seven points and 10 boards.
St. Mary (12-0, 10-0 SVC) hosts Onaway on Thursday with a two-game lead in the league standings over Joburg, its closest competitor in conference action. The Cardinals' two losses have both come at the hands of Gaylord St. Mary.
Onaway 58 Central Lake 45
Onaway jumped out to an early lead and made it hold for a 58-45 Ski Valley Conference win over Central Lake.
The Cardinals (8-4, 5-4 SVC) led 20-2 early on. Temera Lupu had 17 points in the win while Kallie Shimel had 11.
Sheila Crouse scored 27 points for Central Lake.
Bellaire 39 Inland Lakes 36
Bellaire evened its Ski Valley Conference record with a 39-36 win over Inland Lakes.
Katie Thornton led the Eagles (6-5, 4-4 SVC) with 11 points and five rebounds. Olivia Herring added eight boards and a half dozen points, while Madalyn Balon chipped in nine points, four assists, seven rebounds and four steals.
Kaitlyn Brendly scored 16 to lead the Bulldogs.
Bellaire travels Thursday to Central Lake.
Cadillac 50 TC Central 47
Cadillac moved into a second-place tie in the Big North Conference with a 50-47 victory over Traverse City Central.
The Vikings and Trojans are now knotted up with identical 5-2 BNC records.
Nicole Bruggema led Cadillac (8-4, 5-2) with 12 points, and Mary Emington added 10.
Katie Knudsen scored 19 points to finish the game 18 shy of the 1,000-point plateau. Ali Walker chipped in 12 points.
The Trojans (6-6, 5-2 BNC) host Alpena on Friday.
Cadillac won the JV game 45-25 despite 10 points by Callie Bartkowiak, and the Vikings claimed a 22-20 freshman win as Ashley Reed had 12 of Central's 20 points.
TC St. Francis 53 Elk Rapids 48
Cassie Williams drained a 3-pointer to pull Traverse City St. Francis even with Elk Rapids in the fourth quarter, and also helped the Gladiators pull away for a 53-48 Lake Michigan Conference victory.
St. Francis (9-1, 5-0 LMC) found itself down three points with four minutes to go before Williams' 3-pointer that sparked a 9-0 run. Liza Erickson hit 4-of-4 free throws down the stretch to help clinch the win.
Erickson ended with 14 points, Williams with 13 and Lauren Buckel added 12.
Megan Gregorski scored 15 points for the Elks (7-4, 4-2 LMC), who host Harbor Springs on Friday.
St. Francis (6-4) dropped the JV game 54-30, as the Elks' Rachel Hintz scored 20 points. Molly Callery scored eight for TCSF.
Kalkaska 55 East Jordan 53
East Jordan made a fourth quarter run, but Kalkaska hung on for a 55-53 Lake Michigan Conference win.
The Blazers (9-1, 5-0 LMC) led 34-20 at the half and 42-29 after three. The Red Devils knocked down four 3-pointers in their late run.
For Kalkaska, Kelli Guy had 19 points and nine assists, Allison Hendricks had 12 points and five boards, Jamie Myas had 10 points and five steals while Sophy Menestrina had eight points and five assists.
Grace Howes had 18 points for East Jordan while Val Peters scored 12.
Benzie Central 61 Mason Co. Central 45
Jordan Nye scored a game-high 21 points as Benzie Central notched a non-conference 61-45 victory over Mason County Central.
Nye added four steals and four assists.
Sara Goodchild chipped in 15 points and Paige Sauer had nine points and four assists.
Madison Geers led Mason County with 14 and Holly Olen had 12.
Benzie (7-4) travels Thursday to Mesick in Northwest Conference action.
McBain 56 Beal City 45
McBain emerged with a 56-45 road win over Beal City in Highland Conference action.
The Ramblers (9-1, 6-0 HC) trailed most of the game, but took the lead midway through the fourth quarter off a Kaitlyn Bronkema 3-pointer.
Madison Barnette came off the bench for McBain with 11 points and six assists — including three 3-pointers. Annemarie Hamlet had 13 points, Brittany Watson had 11 points and 10 rebounds while Melissa Bazuin had 12 points and five steals.
The Ramblers play at Pine River on Friday.
Ellsworth 56 Boyne Falls 40
Ellsworth picked up a 56-40 Northern Lakes Conference win over Boyne Falls.
The Lancers (7-5, 6-2 NLC) had 22 points and 13 rebounds from Emily Veenstra while Kari Steenwyck had 11 points and seven assists. Dana Neumann also had 10 points and 20 rebounds.
For Boyne Falls, Emily Matelski had 13 points.
Lake City 47 Marion 27
Sophomore guard Maggie Eising scored 10 of her game-high 15 points in a five-minute span to spark a 15-0 Lake City run late in the second quarter and help the Trojans post a 47-27 victory over visiting Highland Conference foe Marion.
Radha Patel scored 11, including a 3-pointer, for the host Trojans (3-8) and fellow guard Megan Atkins tallied eight. Buffy Buttis pulled down nine boards and blocked six shots. Eising recorded five rebounds and three steals.
Madelin Swiler paced the Eagles with eight points.
TCBAA 55 Northport 31
Molly Plamondon's 22 points and Casie Plamondon's 17 points led the TCBAA to a 55-31 win over Northport.
For the Wildcats, Nina Muller had 12 points, 12 rebounds and three steals. Northport plays Lake Leelanau St. Mary's on Thursday.
TC West Frosh 40 Elk Rapids Frosh 25
Kari Cannon scored 12 points and Sarah Kyser nine as the Traverse City West freshmen defeated the Elk Rapids freshmen 40-25.
