  • U-M's Berenson enjoys his time at camp

    Red Berenson said he feels like a fox in a henhouse. The University of Michigan hockey coach attended Detroit Red Wings training camp in Traverse for the second straight year at the behest of Wings coach Mike Babcock, and says the experience is one to remember.

  • Ozzie is back in the saddle

    After Friday's physical to open training camp, Chris Osgood tried to escape from Centre ICE unnoticed. It didn't work. When the Red Wings goaltender quietly exited out the front door -- away from the media and fans on the East end -- he was spotted and flooded by a number of autograph seekers.

  • Hossa's goal: Win a Cup

    If you can't beat 'em, sign with 'em -- for $7.4 million dollars. Just don't think it's all about the money for All-Star right wing Marian Hossa, who jumped from the runner-up Pittsburgh Penguins to the champion Detroit Red Wings in the offseason.

  • Stanley Cup champs return to TC

    The Detroit Red Wings had just completed their off-ice testing Friday morning at Centre ICE when coach Mike Babcock was asked about the results. "I didn't look," he said. "I'll look (today on the ice)." That evaluation process begins today as the defending Stanley Cup champions take to the ice for their first official day of practice.

  • Wings try out reclamation projects

    One is named Swan and has gone from the Ducks to the Wings. The other used to live in Patrick Roy's house. Both are former second-round draft picks who the Detroit Red Wings are hoping can turn it around. Bryce Swan and Joey Ryan were picked 10 spots apart in the 2006 NHL Draft. Neither was picked by Detroit, but now both are wearing the winged wheel.

  • Rangers give Messier a shot

    There aren't any names or numbers on the New York Rangers practice jerseys this week during the NHL's prospect camp at Centre ICE. Perhaps that's the ideal situation for Lyon Messier, who is trying to make his own name in the hockey world that his father, Mark, dominated for 25 years.

  • Axelsson may add to Wings' Swede tradition

    You've heard this one before. The Detroit Red Wings pluck a diamond in the rough from the lower tiers of the Sweden's leagues. Said kid costs Detroit only a middle-round draft pick, and goes on to be a major contributor on a Stanley Cup team. The punch line is always the same; only the names change.

  • Abdelkader makes impression on Red Wings

    Justin Abdelkader had quite an indoctrination into the National Hockey League. After ending his career at Michigan State, Abdelkader signed a contract with the Detroit Red Wings late last season, played in two games and then became a Black Ace -- part of the practice squad during the team's Stanley Cup run.

    It was mainly the same drills, but it was far from just another practice for Hunter Kelly. Kelly, a senior starting goalie for Traverse City Central, ended up playing in goal for the Tampa Bay Lightning in practice at the 2008 NHL Prospects Tournament on Friday.

  • Red Wings like their prospects

    It's probably the last thing opposing NHL teams want to hear coming out of Detroit right now. Not only are the defending Stanley Cup champions loaded with talent, but the the organization believes it has quality players in the farm system that will keep them competitive for years to come.

    So much for a local flavor to the 2008 Prospects Tournament. Area hockey products Zach Redmond and Will Weber have been informed by their teams that if they participate in any games at the tournament, they would lose their collegiate eligibility.
