Storm could drop more than foot of snow

A late-winter weekend storm could drop more than a foot of snow on northern Michigan. Meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Gaylord said Friday the region could wake up to between 5 and 9 inches of snow today, with another 2 to 4 inches expected during the day. Temperatures will drop to the low teens tonight, prompting a bout of lake-effect snow showers that could bring another 2 to 4 inches on Sunday.

"It's probably the most significant storm of the season — nothing historical, but it's been a while since residents have experienced a storm like this one," said meteorologist Nick Schwartz.

Friday night, road crews reported several downed powerlines, including some that set trees on fire. Numerous trees and branches fell, some blocking roads. Visibility was poor and pavement was slick.
