Beach Bums sign speedy outfielder

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse City Beach Bums have signed speedy outfielder Jason Codiroli, the nephew of a former Detroit Tigers first-round draft pick.

Codiroli has two seasons of professional baseball experience, including six games last season with the Triple-A Portland Beavers.

The San Diego Padres selected Codiroli in the 20th round of the 2008 draft. He started with the Arizona League Padres, and hit .309 with a home run and 14 RBIs in 51 games. His .422 on-base percentage was fourth-best in the league.

The Padres moved Codiroli to the Eugene Emeralds, the team's Northwest League affiliate, to start the 2009 season. The 5-foot--10, 175-pound outfielder batted .290 in 59 games with four homers and 29 RBIs, leading the team with 15 steals.

He earned him a promotion to AAA in early September, and went 4-for-19 in six games for Portland with one double, one triple, two runs and three RBIs.

Codiroli's father, Mike, played in the minor leagues for six years. Mike's brother, Chris, had an eight-year major league career with the Oakland Athletics, Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Royals after being a No. 1 draft pick by the Detroit Tigers in 1978. He won a career-high 14 games with the Athletics in 1985.
