Boys Hoops: Titans pick up road win

Boyne City knocks off Grayling, 62-55

GAYLORD — Traverse City West won its third straight game on Friday with a 74-66 victory at Gaylord.

There were 56 fouls called in the game.

The Titans (12-6, 8-3 BNC) trailed 34-27 at half but tied it 54-54 going to the fourth.

Donny Cizek had 18 points and three assists in the win, Graeme Placek had 17 points, six rebounds and two assists, Trevor Commissaris had 12 points and four rebounds while Kendrick Meyer and Nate Castor each scored seven.

Troy Gahn led Gaylord with 26 points, including 14-20 free throws.

West won the JV game 51-45. Alex Scott had 12 points for the Titans (12-6, 9-2 BNC), Tristan Roman scored nine, Jonny Wheelock had eight steals and Chris Pearl had eight rebounds.

Mt. Pleasant      36 TC Central      34

Mt. Pleasant held on for a 36-34 non-conference win over TC Central.

The Trojans set up a play to tie the game in the closing seconds, but couldn't get the shot off. Ethan Pilarski had 13 points for TC Central (5-11) while Kyle Shomin had 14 for the Oilers.

The Trojans won the JV game 54-46 as Zach Egbert scored 12 points. The freshmen also won 52-18.

TC Central is at Midland on Tuesday.

Boyne City     62 Grayling     55

Jay Redman had 23 points, nine rebounds and three assists as Boyne City knocked off Grayling 62-55 in a key Lake Michigan Conference game.

The loss dropped the Vikings two games behind St. Francis, which claimed at least a share of the title as a result.

The Ramblers (11-5, 7-5) led 9-7, 29-19 and 39-31 at the quarter breaks.

Sophomore point guard Bradley Fouchia, recently called up from JV, added 11 points. He replaced Keegan LaBlance, who rolled an ankle early in the game. Ryan Carson chipped in eight points and nine rebounds.

Steven Enos netted 17 points and Zane Tobin 12 for Grayling.

Elk Rapids     64 Kalkaska     33

Kalkaska moved into a second-place tie with Grayling in the Lake Michigan Conference by beating Kalkaska 64--33.

Luke Morrison had 19 points, nine assists, six rebounds and five steals in limited minutes for the Elks (12-4, 9-3). Philip Hayes added 13 points.

Nate Cummings and Tyler Tinker led the Blazers with 10 points.

The Elks hosts St. Francis on Tuesday.

Charlevoix      77 Harbor Springs      54

Charlevoix's Charlie Hamilton scored 21 points in a 77-54 Lake Michigan Conference win over Harbor Springs.

The Rayders (11-6, 7-5 LMC) also had 11 points from Andrew Plude while Coby Herriman had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Harbor Springs had 23 points from Peter Lauer while Spencer Kloss had 19 points.

Charlevoix takes on Grayling on Tuesday while the Rams travel to Boyne City.

Bellaire      67 Gaylord St. Mary      32

Bellaire moved to 16-1 on the season with a 67-32 Ski Valley Conference win over Gaylord St. Mary.

The Eagles (13-1 SVC) had 17 points and seven rebounds from Casey Poel, 17 points and five rebounds from Mitch Teetzel while Gus Meriwether had 12 points and four rebounds.

Mancelona     71 Forest Area     60

Down 10 in the first quarter, Mancelona battled back for a 71-60 Ski Valley win over Forest Area.

The Ironmen turned it around with a 27-point second quarter, taking a 35-30 lead at the break.

Brandon Dingman's 27 points and six rebounds paced the Ironmen (9-7, 7-5). Brandon Scott added 13 points, Kyle Schepperley 12 points and seven rebounds, and Justin Spires eight points and eight rebounds.

The Warriors were led by Jermaine Nix with 17, Justin Burke 13.

Central Lake      70 Joburg      53

Central Lake jumped out to an 18-8 lead in the first quarter and never looked back for a 70-53 Ski Valley Conference win over Johannesburg-Lewiston.

The Trojans (10-8) had 19 points from Trevor Papineau while Corbin Cassio scored 14 and Wyatt Kemintzer added 12 points.

Sean Aisthorpe had 13 points for Joburg.

Benzie Central      60 Suttons Bay      51

Benzie Central went on an 18-11 run in the third quarter that spelled the difference in a 60-51 Northwest Conference win over Suttons Bay.

The Huskies (10-5, 10-1 NWC) led 30-24 at the break. Connor Stapleton had 25 points for Benzie while Cory Taylor added nine.

Greg Banks had 14 points for the Norse (10-5, 6-4 NWC) while Mason Darling added 13 points.

Glen Lake     43 Kingsley     42

Michael O'Brien scored 30 points, and hit four clutch free throws down the stretch, as Glen Lake edged Kingsley 43-42 in a Northwest Conference clash.

Rachi Sims and Austin Nagy netted 12 points apiece for Kingsley (7-10).

The Lakers (11-5, 9-2) travel to Leland on Wednesday while the Stags are at Benzie.

Manistee CC     69 Walkerville     39

Zack Bialik scored 20 points and Ben Feliczak 15 as Manistee Catholic upended Walkerville 69-39 in West Michigan D play.

All eight Sabers scored in the game.

Jesse Miller and Nathan Papes added nine points while Alex Hogan contributed seven rebounds and nine assists.

Alba      53 Ellsworth      48

Alba's Joe Dixon scored 17 points in a 53-48 win over Ellsworth.

The Lancers (5-10) had 16 points, 12 rebounds and five assists from Jake Seeney while Matt Barraw had 19 points.

Ellsworth hosts Harbor Light today at noon.

McBain      65 McBain NMC      47

McBain clinched at least a share of the Highland Conference title Friday with a 65-47 victory at the court of cross-town rival NMC.

The Ramblers (15-2, 11-0) outscored NMC 17-4 over the final six minutes of the third quarter to break open a close game. Logan Nemeth turned three steals into transition buckets in the quarter and scored a team-high 13 points in the game. Nate Smith, Kyle Zuiderveen and Jared Larr each scored 11.

Buckley     36 Mesick     31

Buckley rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Northwest Conference rival Mesick 36-31 before an estimated crowd of 1,200.

More than 100 former players showed up as part of the school's Centennial Celebration.

Down 23-18 entering the fourth quarter, the Bears (8-8, 3-6) sent the crowd home happy. Evan Chalker's 20 points led the way.

Buckley hosts Suttons Bay on Monday.

Senior Kyle Benthem hit three treys and had a game-high 19 points for the Comets (13-4, 8-3) and junior Trevor Gernaat scored 14.
