EAST JORDAN — Damon Sheehy-Guiseppi's double-double sparked St. Francis to a 99-73 Lake Michigan Conference basketball win at East Jordan on Friday.
Sheehy-Guiseppi finished with 23 points, 11 assists and six steals for the 17-0 Gladiators, 12-0 in the league. Kody Kleinrichert added 20 points and seven rebounds, Austin Currie 18 points and five assists, Connor Archer 12 points and Byron Bullough nine.
St. Francis led 42-32 at half.
Jordan Weber netted 24 points. Joe Manville 17 and Noah Bacchus 16 for the Red Devils. Bacchus also had eight assists. East Jordan hit 12 3-pointers.
St. Francis returns to action Tuesday, hosting Elk Rapids.
BOYS HOOPS
Elk Rapids 50 Kalkaska 43
Freshman Shae Somers knocked down a pair of big 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and scored five of his team's nine points in overtime as Elk Rapids topped Kalkaska 50-43 in overtime.
Somers ended with 13 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Adam Trautman had 13 points and nine rebounds.
The Elks (9-8, 6-6 Lake Michigan Conference) travel Tuesday at Traverse City St. Francis.
Caleb Gelinas led Kalkaska with 15 points. Will Noble added eight points and 10 rebounds for the Blazers, who host East Jordan on Tuesday.
Grayling 77 Boyne City 76
Justice Juntilla scored 22 points and Jake Swander 15 as Grayling held on to beat Boyne City 77-76.
Corey Redman's 37 points topped the Ramblers (8-8, 5-7 LMC) while Ryan Carson added 15 points and Maceo Vroman had 13 points. Brad Fouchia had 10 points.
Frankfort 61 Mesick 39
Frankfort hit the boards for a 61-39 Northwest Conference win over Mesick.
The Panthers (14-1, 9-1 NWC) out-rebounded the Bulldogs 52-20.
David Loney led Frankfort with 24 points and 16 rebounds while Thane Herbert scored 25 points for Mesick.
Frankfort is at Kingsley on Monday.
Glen Lake 63 Leland 32
Glen Lake moved to 14-2 on the season with a 63-32 Northwest Conference win over Leland.
The Lakers (10-1 NWC) had 15 points from Mike O'Brien while Carter Lee scored 13 points.
Tyler Leveque led the Comets with 17 points.
Suttons Bay 55 Buckley 40
Suttons Bay notched a 55-40 Northwest Conference win over Buckley.
Cameron Tarlton led the Norsemen (4-11) with 18 points and Aaron Orban added 14 points, 13 rebounds and five steals.
Austin Burmania scored a game-high 22 for Buckley, which travels Monday to Leland.
Benzie Central 69 Kingsley 52
Nate Oren scored 21 points, Corey Weaver 18 and Ismael Halaweh 16 as Benzie Central posted a 69-52 Northwest Conference win over Benzie Central.
Travis DeBello paced Kingsley (8-8, 6-4) with 23 points. Tyler Newell contributed 12.
"We had too many fouls and we gave up too many points at the line," Kingsley coach Jim Rawlings said.
Benzie was 28-of-37 at the line, Kingsley 7-of-11.
The Stags host Frankfort on Monday.
Mancelona 66 Forest Area 52
Mancelona pulled away in the fourth quarter to notch a 66-52 Ski Valley Conference win over Forest Area.
Brandon Dingman — whose shot at the halftime buzzer gave the Ironmen a 32-30 lead — led Mancelona with 21 points, while Brandon Scott racked up 20 points and seven rebounds. Logan Borst added 10 points and five assists.
Forest Area — which was playing its last home game of the season — was led by 19 points from Chad Roberts.
Justin Burke added 13 points for the Warriors (11-5, 9-4 SVC), who travel Wednesday to Gaylord and Friday to Central Lake.
Scott Sedwick added six rebounds and three assists and Austin Vance had 11 points and six boards.
Bellaire 76 Gaylord St. Mary 31
Bellaire ran its unbeaten record to 15-0 with a 76-31 Ski Valley win over Gaylord St. Mary.
Mitch Teetzel and Tyler Thornton led the Eagles (12-0 in league). Teetzel finished with 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Thornton left the game with 21 points and three steals. In addition, Drew Bailey had 12 points, three assists and two steals; and Adam Underwood 10 points and four assists. Bellaire had 18 assists total.
"Our assists are about double what they were last year and we had a good ballclub last year," Bellaire coach Stan Sexton said.
The Eagles are at Mancelona on Wednesday.
Manistee CC 75 Walkerville 32
Manistee Catholic improved to 12-1 in the West Michigan D with a 75-32 triumph over Walkerville.
Zack Bialik led the Sabers (13-3 overall) with 22 points and six rebounds. Ben Feliczak, Blake Vargas and Nick Fortier all added 13 points. Feliczak pulled down eight rebounds, Vargas seven. Alex Bialik dished out six assists.
Sam Sweet netted 22 for Walkerville. It was 40-18 at half.
Catholic is at Brethren on Wednesday.
McBain 63 McBain NMC 43
Senior guard Jared Larr dialed in from 3-point land seven times and scored a game-high 23 points as McBain defeated visiting cross-town rival Northern Michigan Chrisitan 63-43 in Highland play.
The Ramblers (12-4, 9-2), coming off a huge road victory the night before at Beal City, kept themselves in contention for the league title.
Senior forward Andy Lucas (12) and center Hunter Powell (11) joined Larr in double figures for McBain.
Senior guard Matt Pluger produced 16 points to pace the Comets (8-8, 4-6).
Boyne Falls 55 Ellsworth 36
Boyne Falls topped Ellsworth 55-36 in Northern Lake Conference play.
Nate Veldboom and Diamond McPherson led the Lancers (4-9, 4-4 NLC) with 12 points apiece. Brian Drenth added seven.
Wolverine 58 Alba 38
Wolverine topped Alba 58-38 in Northern Lakes Conference action.
Brandin Milbocker scored 22 points for Alba (3-10, 0-9 NLC).
Bear Lake 63 BR Crossroads 40
Bear Lake earned a 63-40 Western Michigan D League win over Big Rapids Crossroads to get back to .500 for the season.
Tyler Johnson led the Lakers (7-7, 6-6 WMDL) with 16 points and six rebounds. Josh Metiva had 12 points and three blocks while Riley Merrill had eight points and 13 boards.
TC Central frosh 35 St. Francis frosh 28
Mason Houston scored 17 points as the Traverse City Central freshman beat St. Francis 35-28.
HOCKEY
TC Central 7 G.R. F.H. Eastern 2
Cooper Macdonell started Traverse City Central off with a natural hat trick in a 7-2 non-conference win over Grand Rapids Forest Hills Eastern.
The win gave Central its second 20-win season in the program's history. The other came when the Trojans won the Division 2 state title in 2006.
Alex Oliver and Reilly deTar scored goals and Jon Russell added two for No. 2 Central (20-3), which travels to Muskegon Mona Shores today to play Division 1's No. 4-ranked team.
Assists went to Brady Brantley (three), Nico Saco (two), Kyle Ludwig (two), Andrew Froese, Russell, Cooper Marshall, Connor McGraw, Mitchell Ward, Oliver and Macdonell.
Michael Wittersheim made 13 saves for Central, which outshot the Hawks 37-15.
