Sci-fi writer convicted in Mich.

PORT HURON -- A Canadian science fiction writer who authorities say refused to comply during an inspection by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in December has been convicted in the case.

A St. Clair County jury in Port Huron on Friday found 52-year-old Peter Watts, of Toronto, guilty of assaulting, obstructing and resisting a police officer. He faces up to two years in prison when sentenced April 26.

Watts was trying to cross into Canada on Dec. 8 at the Blue Water Bridge when his vehicle was selected for inspection. Authorities say he was detained after becoming noncompliant.

Visteon retirees file emergency motion

DOVER, Del. -- Former workers for auto parts supplier Visteon Corp. are pushing ahead with their fight to preserve their retiree health and life insurance benefits.

The retirees filed an emergency motion Thursday asking a federal judge in Delaware to halt the company's plan to terminate benefits on April 1 for some 2,100 people who worked at two Visteon plants in Indiana.

Marshals arrest man wanted for slayings

DETROIT -- U.S. Marshals using information from Detroit police have arrested in California a man wanted in a double slaying reported by the 8-year-old daughter of one of the victims.

Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans says 42-year-old Derrick Smith was arrested about 1:30 p.m. Friday on a street in Gardena, Calif.

Smith was wanted on two counts of murder in the March 1 shooting deaths of 26-year-old Monica Botello and her 26-year-old boyfriend, Purcell Carson, in the basement of Carson's Detroit home.
