CENTRAL LAKE —
On an emotional night, Central Lake's basketball team didn't disappoint.
A day after the death of former teammate Maris Spaulding, the Trojans earned a 51-30 victory over Ellsworth in a packed home contest.
"This might have been one of the worst days at school and one of the best ways to end the day," Central Lake coach Quinn Barry said. "The players and the students were great. Our community turnout for this game was spectacular. A big reason is the Spaulding family. They're really well respected, and Maris battled all the way."
Spaulding passed away Thursday evening after a months-long battle with leukemia.
Also a star pitcher on the diamond, the school lit luminary bags around the softball field.
The basketball players wore orange "MariStrong" T-shirts.
"Our team was spectacular with how they held it together," Barry said.
Lauren Rogers led the Trojans (2-0) with 19 points, Allie Hines scored 12 and Jaynee Mortenson eight.
Tara Essenberg led Ellsworth (0-2) with 10.
The Trojans return to the court Wednesday at Gaylord St. Mary.
Kingsley 53 TC St. Francis 50
Kenzie Meeker scored 18 points as Kingsley improved to 2-0 with a 53-50 win over St. Francis in the Northwest Conference-Lake Michigan Conference Crossover Challenge.
The game was tied 27-27 at half. Kingsley led by as many as 10 points in the second half.
Autumn Goggin added nine points and Katie Travis and Amanda Youker eight apiece.
Liza Erickson scored 11 points and Bridget Bussell 10 for St. Francis (2-1).
Kingsley travels to Cadillac on Tuesday, while St. Francis hosts the Vikings on Dec. 10.
Elk Rapids 57 Leland 42
Elk Rapids opened up the Northwest Conference-Lake Michigan Conference Crossover Challenge with a 57-42 victory over Leland.
The challenge features a series of eight games between Northwest and Lake Michigan teams in Kingsley — three Friday and five Saturday.
Paige Granger scored 11 points and Celsey Waite and Rachel Hintz 10 each for Elk Rapids. Michelle Costa added eight for the Elks (1-0), who travel Tuesday to Glen Lake.
Leland (0-1) was led by 15 points from Caitlin McKee and 11 points and five assists by Libby Munoz. The Comets host Manistee Catholic on Tuesday.
Frankfort 71 Charlevoix 45
Frankfort won 71-45 over Charlevoix in the second game of the Northwest Conference-Lake Michigan Conference Crossover Challenge.
Keelan Kelly led the Panthers with 12 points and Shelby Packard added 10.
Charlevoix was paced by Madeline Boss' 20 points. Katie Hybl added six points and three steals and Sydney Carslon chipped in five points, four steals and four assists. The Rayders (1-1) host Harbor Springs on Friday.
Lake City 50 Forest Area 20
Lake City rang its record up to 2-0 with a 50-20 non-conference victory over Forest Area.
Maggie Eising led the Trojans with 13 points, 14 rebounds and four steals, while Makayla Schichtel added 10 points and 12 rebounds and Elizabeth Buttis contributed 12 points 10 boards and four blocks.
Schichtel scored eight of her 10 points in the first half as Lake City built a 24-7 lead.
The Warriors (0-1) were led by Kortni Birgy's seven points and 11 rebounds. Forest Area hosts Johannesburg-Lewiston to start the Ski Valley Conference slate Friday.
Lake City travels to Suttons Bay on Tuesday.
Joburg-Lewiston 49 Onaway 30
Johannesburg-Lewiston survived foul trouble to emerge with a 49-30 victory over Ski Valley Conference foe Onaway.
Joburg had 28 fouls to Onaway's eight, and J-L coach Heather Huff said the bench played well when several starters sat due to foul trouble.
Brittany Cherwinski led Joburg (2-0, 1-0 SVC) with 12 points and three steals, while Natalie Hamilton added seven points and Katelyn Weaver had six points and six rebounds.
Kallie Shimel led Onaway with nine points.
St. Ignace 53 Petoskey 38
Kelley Wright tossed in 21 points as St. Ignace beat host Petoskey 53-38 in the Petoskey Invitational.
The Saints will play Brighton today for the title. Brighton beat Marquette 54-50 in overtime.
Megan Tompkins led Petoskey with 18 points. Petoskey and Marquette meet in the consolation game at 1:30.
TC Bulldogs 31 Marion 16
Molly Plamondon led the way with 11 points, six rebounds and four steals as the Traverse City Bulldogs earned a 31-16 win over Marion to open the season.
Casie Plamondon added 10 points and Sarah Plamondon eight as the Bulldogs forced 21 turnovers.
The Bulldogs host the Grand Rapids Grizzlies today at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.
Lake Leelanau SM 61 GT Academy 40
Lake Leelanau St. Mary's picked up its first win of the season with a 61-40 win over Grand Traverse Academy.
Rachael Thon scored 16 points and Marta Herman and Megan Popp each had a dozen for the Eagles (1-2), and Hannah Weber added 10.
Tiffany Wright scored 13 and Amelia Peck 12 for GT Academy.
Brighton frosh 28 TC West frosh 11
The Brighton freshmen beat Traverse City West 28-11.
Talia Polmann led the Titans with six points.
TC Central 6 Petoskey 2
Cooper Macdonell and Nico Saco each scored two goals as Traverse City Central won its third straight game to start the season with a 6-2 Big North Conference victory over visiting Petoskey.
The Trojans led 3-0 after the first period on goals by Cam Givens, Saco and Macdonell.
Petoskey got on the board on Tanner Davis' score at 14:31 of the second before Saco's power-play goal reinstated Central's three-goal lead heading into the final stanza.
Mitchell Ward struck for a goal 11 ticks into the third period off a Givens assist and Macdonell converted a Derek Schrank assist into his second goal 2:40 later.
Petoskey's Kevin Hansen scored off a Ben Schwartzfisher assist with 10:22 left. Nick Trombler also had an assist on Davis' goal.
Central's first-period assists went to Ward, Brady Brantley and Rhys Adle.
Bill Vermetten made 10 saves for Central, which held a commanding 40-12 advantage in shots on goal. Petoskey's Breanna Merriam stopped 34 shots.
The Trojans (3-0, 1-0 BNC) head to Cadillac on Wednesday.
