PETOSKEY — Traverse City West wrapped up at least a share of the Big North Conference girls basketball title with a hard-fought 35-31 victory over Petoskey.
"I'm very proud of the kids," West coach Patti Tibaldi said. "It was a defensive battle. We hung in there."
With Ressa Borkovich likely out for the rest of the season with a broken foot, the Titans played without their tallest player against a big Northmen squad. Katie Placek was able to limit the Petoskey offense inside and also grab a team-high seven rebounds.
Lauren Ellison scored eight points to lead West in scoring, while sophomore Kylie Kreple had seven points and six rebounds and Shaina Streeter scored a half dozen.
Kelsey Ance led Petoskey (5-5 BNC) with 13 points and Kaitlyn Crittendon added six.
The Titans (13-5, 9-1 BNC) can clinch the title outright with a home win Thursday against Gaylord.
West won the JV game 31-15 as Kimmy Bilinski and Paris Wagner scored eight points apiece. The West freshmen won 21-19 as Jodi Turnquist had 11.
TC Central 39 Ogemaw Heights 9
Traverse City Central set a school record, holding Ogemaw Heights below double digits in a 39-9 Big North Conference victory.
The defensive effort set a new mark in Trojans history for fewest points scored by an opponent.
Katie Knudsen and Ali Walker each scored more points than the Falcons, as Knudsen had 15 and Walker 10.
The Trojans (9-7, 8-3 BNC) host McBain tonight.
Central won the JV game 40-34 behind 12 points by Callie Bartkowiak, and the freshmen prevailed 29-20 as Carrie Wynkoop scored nine.
TC St. Francis 60 Harbor Springs 39
Cassie Williams scored a game-high 26 points as Traverse City St. Francis kept up its winning ways with a 60-39 Lake Michigan Conference victory over Harbor Springs.
Liza Erickson added 11 points and McKaely Ludka 10 for the Gladiators, who were 14 of 17 from the free-throw line.
Charlevoix 63 Elk Rapids 41
Jenna Way and Maddie Boss led Charlevoix to a 63-41 Lake Michigan Conference victory over Elk Rapids.
Way scored 17 and Boss 16 for the Elks (5-11, 3-7 LMC), who travel to East Jordan on Tuesday. Kelsey Way added 10 points.
Kalkaska 72 Grayling 52
Kelli Guy hit 11 of 16 shots to lead Kalkaska to a 72-52 Lake Michigan Conference win over Grayling.
Guy ended up with 25 points, seven assists and four steals.Sophy Menestrina chipped in 22 points and eight rebounds, while Jamie Myas had 11 points and Tabitha Kibbe seven.
Jo Hamlin paced Garyling (7-9) with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Cierra Prosser added 10 points.
McBain 78 NMC 44
Annemarie Hamlet, Meredith Hamlet and Melisa Bazuin each connected twice from 3-point land as visiting McBain defeated Highland Conference foe Northern Michigan Christian 78-44.
Shooting guard Annemarie buried 25 points to lead the Ramblers (14-1, 11-0) and was joined in double digits by her younger sister Meredith (16) and Bazuin (13).
