Harbor boys win D-2 state ski title

St. Francis boys 3rd; Petoskey girls finish 2nd

HARBOR SPRINGS -- Bellaire had its King of the hill, but it was Harbor Springs' home-hill advantage that brought the Rams a state championship of their own.

Drake Doherty led the Harbor Springs boys to a state title as the Rams skied on their own hill in the Division 2 state championships.

Doherty was second overall in both the slalom and giant slalom, each time just behind Bellaire/Central Lake's Mike King, who qualified as an individual.

King won the GS with a combined time of 50.26 seconds, with Doherty second at 50.45. In slalom, King's 1:10.52 was again good enough for the state crown, edging out Doherty's 1:12.21.

Harbor ran away with the slalom and was third in giant slalom to claim the title with 100.5 team points. Iron Mountain was second (118.5) and Traverse City St. Francis (128) third.

Dan David and Robert Mathews were 10th and 14th in the slalom for the Rams and each ended in the top 20 of the GS. Jac Talcott was 18th in slalom.

St. Francis was led by sophomore Stephen Siddall, who was second in GS and fourth in slalom (in team scoring).

Cadillac's Carter Marsh and Jacob Mitchell were eighth and ninth in slalom, just behind Manistee's Paul Swedenborg, who was fifth.

Glen Lake's Jack Kerby-Miller was third in slalom and fifth in GS.

Tyler Hansen was 12th in slalom, with Ben Dirkse 20th. Hansen was also ninth in GS.

"It was a great day for racing," St. Francis assistant coach Sam Siddall said. "It was a nice surprise that Ben moved up from sixth to our third today."

Petoskey's Victoria McVicker pulled off a double of her own, to match King's feat and one-up him at the same time.

Only a junior, McVicker won both races last year as well.

McVicker and Manistee's Natalie Kenny were 1-2 in the GS for the second straight year, with the Northmen skier winning 51.83 seconds to 52.49 this time around.

Houghton won the girls state crown with a team score of 74, just ahead of Petoskey (82) and Manistee (105).

In slalom, Manistee's Kari Paine was third, Glen Lake's Shannon McGovern was sixth, the Chippewas' Andrea Paine was seventh and Petoskey's Sarah Shafer placed eighth.

Kari Paine was third in GS, with Harbor's Andi Shepherd sixth, Boyne City's Morgan Harding eighth, Manistee's Andrea Paine ninth and Cadillac Kinsey Cole 10th.

The Gladiator girls were led by Hattie Christie (18th) and Krissy Dressler (24th) in slalom. In GS, Katy Jenkins was 24th and Christie 25th.
