99-year-old Batori earns nationals trip

THOMPSONVILLE -- Glen Lake's Lou Batori earned his gold medal and a trip to nationals by meeting a qualifying time at the Nature Valley NASTAR Open at Crystal Mountain on Saturday.

The 99-year-old's time qualified him for the national downhill championships in Winter Park, Colo., March 25-28.

Former Olympian A.J. Kitt was the overall race pace-setter.

NASTAR needed to create a new age group and handicap for the veteran skier, as it's done since Batori was 80.

9-year-old Hursey wins Hoop Shoot

MANISTEE -- Thomas Hursey, of Suttons Bay, won his age division in the Elks Hoop Shoot held Saturday in Manistee.

The 9-year-old sank 22 of 25 shots to post the best score of all participants in the three age divisions.

Hursey will move on to the state finals Jan. 30 at Midland.

Call it the great motivator. A year after a crash and burn in the Division 1 ski regional, the Traverse City Central boys came back this season determined to make amends. And did they.

Trojan girls 2nd; Birmingham Marian 1st

This one was for the coach. Birmingham Marian edged Traverse City Central on Monday to become the first girls ski team from southeast Michigan to win a Division 1 state championship.

Harbor boys win D-2 state ski title

Bellaire had its King of the hill, but it was Harbor Springs' home-hill advantage that brought the Rams a state championship of their own. Drake Doherty led the Harbor Springs boys to a state title.

Central, West headed to state ski finals

Traverse City will be well represented at the upcoming Division 1 state ski finals. Traverse City Central won both the boys and girls regional titles Thursday at Marquette while TC West's boys and girls finished in the top three to qualify for the finals.

Manistee girls edge Petoskey in Div. 2

Ten years ago, Manistee won its first girls state ski trophy, finishing second in Class B-C-D. On Monday, the Chippewas topped that, capturing the Division 2 girls title at Marquette Mountain.
