West boys, Central girls capture ski crowns

Aiken, McLachlan lead their teams to wins

CADILLAC -- Traverse City brought back two Big North Conference ski titles Wednesday.

West won the boys' crown at Caberfae while Central claimed the girls championship.

In the boys' meet, the Titans had a first-place showing from Cody Aiken in the giant slalom in 35.82 seconds. Ryan Bondy was fourth (37.30), Lee Batcha fifth (37.47) and James Mikko seventh (38.39).

In the slalom, Aiken was second (50.47) Ryan Ness third (51.54), Bondy fourth (51.79) and Batcha 10th (52.62).

Aiken, Bondy, Batcha, Mikko, Ness and Joey Caraccio all earned Big North Conference honors.

Central finished second. For the Trojans, Clark Phelps placed fifth, Briggs Chapman seventh, Chris Carefoot ninth and Micah Apel 13th in the slalom. In the giant slalom, Carefoot came in sixth, Phelps eighth, Apel ninth and Chapman 12th.

Central scored 36 points to take the girls race. Petoskey was second (66) and West third (82).

Maddey McLachlan paced the Trojans. She won the giant slalom (37.28) and was second in the slalom (49.37). Mallory Weaver was fourth in both races (38.79 and 50.86).

Also scoring for Central: Ellen Whiting, fifth in the slalom (50.93) and seventh in the giant slalom (38.97); Adrienne Bruder, fifth in the giant slalom (38.92); and Sierra Olsen, eighth in the slalom (53.58).

West had a first from Tori Lockwood in the slalom in 48.78 seconds while Nicole Schroeder was seventh (53.29).

In the giant slalom, Lockwood was second (37.87) and Schroeder was sixth (38.93).
