Brengman wins snowboard title
COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colo. -- Traverse City's Matthew Brengman won his age group in the United States of America Snowboarding Association's national championships, bringing the number of local champs to two.
Brengman claimed the Junior Men's division in slope style after the 17-year-old Traverse City West student came into the competition ranked 16th in the country, but nailed a cork 720 tail grab to help seal the title.
Rockwell Nixon of Petoskey won the halfpipe competition in the 16-19 age group on Monday. Cam Wilcox of Petoskey was fifth.
Other area placers were Durand Nixon of Petoskey (ninth, 11-15 age division halfpipe) Hunter Arbaugh of Harbor Springs (13th, 11-15 halfpipe) and Trevor Price of Boyne City (13th, 16-19 halfpipe).
Stags move up, Elks move down
EAST LANSING -- Kingsley will move up to Class B and Elk Rapids will drop down to Class C next season, the Michigan High School Athletic Association announced.
Classifications for the upcoming school year were based on a second semester count date. After all the counts were submitted, the 768 tournament-qualified member schools were ranked according to enrollment, and then split as closely into quarters as possible. The classifications will be used for post-season tournaments in three sports -- boys and girls basketball and girls volleyball.
Brethren is the only other area school affected. The Bobcats will move from Class C to Class D.
Rayders roll to 8-0 victory
EAST JORDAN -- Olivia Catt scored two goals and assisted on a third as Charlevoix opened its soccer season Tuesday with an 8-0 Lake Michigan Conference win over East Jordan.
Meridith Rich added a goal and two assists. K.C. McCary, Caroline Dupuis and Madison Way all contributed a goal and an assist. Hallie Bills and Taylor Smith were the other goal scorers for the Rayders, who host Harbor Springs on Thursday. Bridget Peters and Elisabeth Drost picked up assists. Tammy Potter was in goal.
Elmbrook ladies league meeting set
TRAVERSE CITY -- Spots are still available for area female golfers to join the Elmbrook Ladies Wednesday AM league.
