Soccer Roundup: Devils upset Petoskey

GAYLORD — For the second year in a row, Gaylord has eliminated Petoskey in the first round of Division 2 district soccer play Tuesday.

Midfielder Stephanie Rygwelski and forward Kendall Agee scored second-half goals to spur the Blue Devils to a 3-2 victory Tuesday.

Gaylord (12-2-3) advances to Thurday's semifinals at Cadillac. Petoskey finishes with a 13-3-4 mark.

Junior Rachel Schappacher scored for Petoskey to trim the lead to 3-2 with 20:43 left.

Gabbi VandenBrink scored the other Petoskey goal late in the first half to tie the score 1-1. Krystin Dreyer scored the Blue Devils' first goal.

Freshman Alex Simmons was in net for Gaylord and junior Kate Johnson for Petoskey.

Alpena      2 TC Central      0

Traverse City Central's season came to an end with a 2-0 loss at Alpena.

It was the first district win in school history for the Wildcats, who will host TC West at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Kristen Kennedy scored both goals for Alpena. The first came with 5 minutes left in the first half while the second was off a penalty kick just after halftime.

Devin Blue made seven saves for the Trojans, who ended their season at 4-13-6.

Charlevoix      5 Burt Lake NMCA      2

Madison Way's hat trick propelled Charlevoix to a 5-2 district-opening win over Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian.

Taylor Smith scored the Rayders' other two goals, with Hallie Bills and Way drawing assists.

Ani Vinz and Rebecca Laurie scored goals for Burt Lake, which finishes 15-4 and tied for the Northern Michigan Soccer League title.

Way opened the scoring with a blast from 25 yards out. After Vinz made it 3-1 early in the second half, Way struck on a direct kick for a 4-2 lead.

Bailee Stevens was in net for the Rayders, while Kari Kennedy made 17 stops for the Eagles.

Charlevoix (13-5-2) plays Boyne City today at Harbor Springs in the semifinals.

Suttons Bay      6 Manistee      0

Suttons Bay opened up district play with a 6-0 shutout of Manistee.

Sam Stark had a hat trick for the Norsemen, who play the winner of Mason County Central and Houghton Lake on Thursday in Manistee.

Justin Sourie, Rachel Lichty and Monni Raphael also scored goals for Suttons Bay (13-5-3), while Brittany Mikowski was in net.
