Soccer Roundup: Eagles win district

HARBOR SPRINGS -- Saturday's district soccer championship had to be especially meaningful for three Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian seniors.

Defenders Tommy Rew and Robert Taylor and goalie Josh Fosmore played on the Eagles' team three years that went a whole season without winning a game. The team was entirely devoid of any upperclassmen and used middle school athletes to fill out the roster.

On Saturday, they won the district title, NMCA's first since going to the Division 4 state finals in 2004.

The Eagles scored two goals in the second half to defeat Harbor Light Christian 2-1.

Paul Chatfield scored off a through ball from Wil Lovitt with 3:09 left for the game-winner and Fosmore made eight saves to preserve the win.

Burt Lake coach Rusty Chatfield cited the defensive efforts of Rew, Taylor and midfielder Josh Lovitt.

Aaron Chatfield scored the Eagles' first goal near the midway point of the second half off a free kick from 20 yards out. Harbor Light scored with 10 minutes left to tie the contest at 1-1.

Burt Lake (20-4) will play in regionals Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Suttons Bay against the winner of the McBain district.
