Roundup: Elks, Gladiators split

ELK RAPIDS -- Elk Rapids and St. Francis split a Lake Michigan Conference baseball doubleheader Monday.

The Elks won the opener 9-4, while the Gladiators took the nightcap 12-2.

Eric Savage pitched a six-hitter in game one for the Elks (6-10, 4-6). Brendan Tully, Tyler Udell and Luke Morrison had two hits apiece for the Elks. Tully drove in two while Udell scored three times and Morrison twice.

Sam Olsen pitched St. Francis to victory in the nightcap, allowing three hits and striking out two. Dylan Seyferth led the Gladiators (7-5, 5-5) with three hits. Jake Peacock, Newt Calcutt and Keith Gingras chipped in two hits.

Mancelona21 16
Johannesburg 0 0

Mancelona pounded out 31 hits and scored 37 runs in sweeping a Ski Valley doubleheader from Johannesburg-Lewiston 21-0 and 16-0.

Greg Blanco led the attack with six hits in the two games for the Ironmen (14-0, 12-0). He also scored six runs and drove in four. Nick Lockman had two hits and scored three runs in the opener while Tyler Hartzell picked up three hits, scored three and drove in two in the nightcap.

Blanco pitched four no-hit innings in the opener. Dan Johnson pitched two-hit ball over four innings in the nightcap.

Kalkaska 10 4
Mesick 11 3

Kalkaska rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn a 4-3 win over Mesick in the second game of a doubleheader.

The Bulldogs won the opener 11-10.

The Blazers (12-6) earned their win when Travis Schuba tripled in the sixth inning and Tyler Perrin brought him home on a shot to right field. Schuba was 3-for-3 in the game while Jared Raymond pitched the win.

In the opener, Kevin Zattlin was 4-for-4 for Kalkaska while Schuba had two hits.

Central Lake 12
Harbor Light 11

Central Lake emerged with a 12-11 non-conference win over Harbor Light Academy.

The nightcap was called for darkness.

The Trojans (11-6) had four hits from Travis Rogers while Ryan Crowley singled, homered and tallied three RBIs. Joel Miller also had two doubles and four RBIs.

St. Francis 8 10
Elk Rapids 5 3

St. Francis improved to 8-2 in the Lake Michigan Conference with 8-5 and 10-3 wins over Elk Rapids.

Amy Brunner earned the win in the opener, which went seven innings. Brunner and Heather Larsen led the offense with two hits. Sarah Brunner and Lauren Adams contributed RBI hits.

Elk Rapids scored twice in the sixth to force extra innings. Jessie Jennings homered to make it 5-4, then Kacey Anderson doubled and Jessie Spoor drove her in with a single to tie the game.

Winning pitcher Rachel Overmire helped her own cause with two RBIs in the nightcap. Larsen had three hits and scored three runs for the Gladiators (13-7). Ellen Kendziorski Amy Brunner and Adams all chipped in two hits.,

Sarah Otte and Courtney Isenahart had two hits apiece for the Elks (8-10, 2-8).

Suttons Bay 13 4
Buckley 9 9

Suttons Bay won its first softball game in more than two years with a 13-9 victory over Buckley in the first of two games.

Laureen Schmidt struck out 12 in the win. She also went 4-for-4 at the plate with four stolen bases and five RBIs. Tory Uprichard and Anna Reyhl added two hits.

Schmidt struck out 12 in the nightcap, a 9-4 loss. Schmidt and Reyhl had two hits.

Kalkaska 3 14
Mesick 1 0

Kalkaska out-dueled Mesick for a 3-1, 14-0 non-conference sweep.

The Blazers (13-5) scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning of the first game to get the win. Two runs were scored off an error while Abby Merrill drove home the final run.

Jen Spann pitched the win with four hits and 16 strikeouts.

Spann and Jamie Myas combined to toss a one-hitter in the nightcap.

Myas had an RBI double, Taren Fales had a bases loaded triple and Shennah Brown had an RBI single.

Mancelona 6 8
Joburg 4 9

Johannesburg-Lewiston rallied in the nightcap for a 9-8 win and a Ski Valley Conference split with Mancelona.

The Ironmen (10-4, 8-4) won the opener 6-4.

Brooke Orman was the winning pitcher for Mancelona in the first game while Kayla Osborn and Sam Watkins each had two hits.

In the nightcap, the Ironmen made seven errors, stranded 14 base runners and coughed up an 8-5 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Orman took the loss and also had two hits.

Elk Rapids JV 0 5

Traverse City St. Francis' JV moved to 16-0 with a 15-0, 20-5 Lake Michigan Conference sweep of Elk Rapids.

Emily Walters pitched the win in the opener while C.J. Zamarron had two hits and Colleen Roddy scored three runs.

Roddy was the winning pitcher in the nightcap. Alyssa Stachnik and Erica Tompke each scored three runs while Maggie Esler had a triple and two singles.
