TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City St. Francis knocked down its free throws to knock off Elk Rapids 60-45 in Lake Michigan Conference play to clinch the Gladiators' second straight title Tuesday.
Last year, St. Francis split the crown with Kalkaska, but the Glads have it all to themselves this time around.
TCSF hit 22 of 29 from the stripe in the victory, turning a seven-point lead after three quarters in a 15-point advantage at the final horn.
Cassie Williams — who was 10 of 12 from the line — scored 23 points, while Jessie Michelin hit all eight of her free throws among her 12 points. Liza Erickson added 11 points.
The Glads (17-2, 13-0 LMC) host Charlevoix on Friday.
Megan Gregorski scored 22 points for the Elks.
The Glads (8-10) won the JV game 45-33, led by 13 points from Molly Callery, 12 by Suzanne Britten and 10 from Erin McDonnell.
GIRLS HOOPS
Kalkaska 55 East Jordan 44
Kelli Guy scored a game-high 22 points as Kalkaska topped East Jordan 55-44 in Lake Michigan Conference action.
Sophy Menestrina added 14 points, Jamie Myas seven and Alisyn Hendricks had seven assists and five rebounds.
Jordan Bacchus scored 11 for East Jordan, while Valerie Peters and Breanna Newberry each had nine.
Kalkaska (15-3) hosts Manistee in a make-up game today.
Charlevoix 63 Grayling 59
Charlevoix picked up a 63-59 Lake Michigan Conference win over Grayling.
Jenna Way scored 21 points for the Rayders (7-12, 5-8 LMC) while Kelsey Way and Megan Peters each had 11 points.
Cierra Prosser led the Vikings (7-12, 3-10 LMC) with 19 points.
Glen Lake 70 Leland 27
Taylor Martin went off for 33 points and added 10 steals and five rebounds to lead Glen Lake to a 70-27 Northwest Conference win over Leland.
Scotlyn Brengman added 22 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals for the Lakers, while Ty Fessell had six points and Sophie Ewing added eight assists and nine steals for Glen Lake (13-6, 10-3 NWC).
Liz McKee scored 12 points and Caitlin McKee seven for the Comets.
Central Lake 52 Forest Area 44
Sheila Crouse scored 29 points to lead Forest Area to a 52-44 Ski Valley Conference win over Forest Area in the first of two meeting between the squads this week.
The two teams will face off again Thursday in Fife Lake as the squads try to get the twice-postponed game in for the third time.
Crouse added six steals, while Jaynee Mortensen had seven points and eight rebounds and Jennifer Corbett grabbed 13 points and scored six points for the Trojans (8-11, 7-8 SVC).
Emily Gonyer scored 16 points and added six rebounds for the Warriors (8-11, 5-10), while Marissa Ingersoll had 15 points.
Ellsworth 51 Mancelona 30
Ellsworth claimed the first of two matchups with Mancelona this week, winning a non-conference game 51-30. The teams will meet up again Thursday in Mancelona.
Dana Nuemann had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Lancers (14-5), while Emily Veenstra added 12 points and nine boards.
Jenna Davis led Mancelona with 12 points.
Ludington 67 Benzie Central 42
D'Erika Varenhorst scored 25 points to lead Ludington to a 67-42 non-conference in over Benzie Central.
Jordan Nye had 13 points, five rebounds and three steals for the Huskies (13-6).
Northport 39 GT Academy 16
Nina Muller scored more points than the opposition as Northport topped Grand Traverse Academy 39-16.
Muller had 18 points, while Autumn Huck added 11 and Yesena Perez seven.
Justine Chester paced GT Academy with nine points.
Bellaire 50 Boyne Falls 33
Bellaire jumped out to a 15-1 lead after the first quarter en route to a 50-33 non-conference win over Boyne Falls.
Chelsye Bartsch led the Eagles (12-8) with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Madalyn Balon chipped in 10 points and a half dozen boards and Olivia Herring had 11 points.
Kristen Matelski led the Loggers with 12 points.
McBain 57 Evart 22
McBain notched a 57-22 Highland Conference victory over Evart to get within a single win of a clean sweep of the league.
The Ramblers (18-1, 13-0 HC) host Beal City in Friday, looking to go 14-0 in league action.
Annemarie Hamlet had 12 points, six steals and six assists for McBain, while Meredith Hamlet added 14 points and five assists, Kaitlyn Bronkema had 11 points and three steals and Brittany Watson chipped in eight points and eight boards.
McBain NMC 46 Lake City 29
Jane Pearson and Brittany Hoekwater each scored 15 points as Northern Michigan Christian defeated host Lake City 46-29 in Highland Conference play Tuesday.
Pearson also pulled down 13 rebounds for a double-double for the Comets (6-11, 3-10 HC). Emma Towers scored six with 12 boards and Sydney Dick grabbed 11 rebounds.
Freshman Holly Eising struck for 12 to lead the Trojans (4-13, 2-10 HC) and Maggie Eising hauled in eight boards.
Lake Leelanau SM 67 Suttons Bay 50
Taylor Moore scored 26 points to lead Lake Leelanau St. Mary to a 67-50 win over Suttons Bay.
Rachael Thon added 19 for the Eagles, who outscored the Norse 46-22 in the second half.
Miranda Schaub had 16 for Suttons Bay, while Jordan Smith poured in 15 points and 16 rebounds.
BOYS HOOPS
Midland 49 TC Central 45
Will Williams scored 16 points as Midland came back to top Traverse City Central 49-45 in a home non-conference matchup.
The Chemics charged out to an 18-7 lead after the first quarter before Central rallied to take a three-point lead into the fourth.
Ryan Verschuren scored 18 points to lead the Trojans (5-12), who host Traverse City West on Thursday.
Midland won the JV contest 63-60, despite 14 points by Max Knoblock, 13 from Mitch Wynkoop and 10 from Nate Schlusler. The Trojan freshmen fell 52-41.
Boyne City 58 Harbor Springs 49
Ryan Carson had a double-double to lead Boyne City to a 58-49 Lake Michigan Conference victory over Harbor Springs.
Carson had 24 points and 11 rebounds.
Corey Redman and Keegan LaBlance had nine points each for the Ramblers (12-5, 8-5 LMC) — who travel Friday to Kalkaska — while Jay Redman added eight points, five assists and three steals.
Neal Zoerhof paced Harbor Springs with 12 points.
Grayling 61 Charlevoix 54
Grayling edged Charlevoix, 61-54 in a Lake Michigan Conference game.
The Vikings (14-4, 10-3 LMC) had 13 points from Tom Burrell, 12 points from Riley Zigila and 11 points from Steven Enos.
Andrew Plude's 13 points paced the Rayders (11-7, 7-6 LMC), while Tanner Catt scored 12 points.
East Jordan 87 Kalkaska 35
John Richards broke loose for 31 points as East Jordan ran away with an 87-35 victory against Kalkaska.
Matt Bolser added all 15 of his points in the second quarter — all on 3-pointers — and Isaiah Sladick had 12 points.
Will Noble led the Blazers with nine points.
TC Christian 45 LL St. Mary's 40
TC Christian topped Lake Leelanau St. Mary's 45-40 in Cherryland Conference action.
The Sabres had 18 points from Ian Newberry while Kris Crosby added 16.
Drew Pobuda had 10 points for the Eagles.
Burt Lake NMCA 87 TCBAA 56
Aaron Chatfield filled up the stat book and led four Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Academy players in double figures as the Eagles topped the Traverse City Bulldogs Athletic Association 87-56.
David Thompson scored a game-high 32 points, while Chatfield was a few stats away from a quadruple-double. He had 23 points, 10 steals, eight rebounds and seven assists.
Stephen Thompson chipped in 16 points and Paul Chatfield had 11 rebounds and 10 points.
NMCA (12-1) hosts 15-2 Cedarville on Friday.
Micaiah Foust led the Bulldogs with 22 points.
HOCKEY
Saulte Ste. Marie 5 TC Central 4
C.J. Wilkins scored the game-winning goal late in the third period and Sault Ste. Marie held off Traverse City Central in a 5-4 non-conference win.
The Trojans held a 27-20 advantage in shots on goal in the matchup of two ranked teams.
Division 2 No. 7-ranked Central finishes the regular season 16-7-1, and hosts the Northwest Warriors in Division 2 regional action Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Centre ICE.
Sault Ste. Marie, ranked No. 9 in Division 3, is 12-9-2.
Lucas Little put Central up 3-2 with a power-play goal 6:34 into the second period. Cam Givens drew an assist, but the Blue Devils scored three unanswered goals from there to take the home win.
Keanen Armour tied the game at 1-1 as Cooper Macdonell and Connor Gartland assisted. Givens put Central up 2-1 at 15:24 of the first off a Nico Saco set up.
