ALPENA — Traverse City West won a 62-37 shootout with Alpena to set up an important battle next Friday with Traverse City Central.
"It was a track meet," West coach Tim Wooer said. "Alpena has a good quarterback and receivers. The scary thing is that's what we're going to see next week — a skilled quarterback and very good receivers. We've got to fix some things. We can't give up 37 next week."
Zac Shafer ran for 235 yards, including 186 in the second half as the Titans erupted for 40 points in the third and fourth quarters after a 22-22 deadlock at halftime.
TC West came out in the third quarter and a 2-yard touchdown run by Shafer and a 3-yard score by Ronnie Saunders put the Titans up 37-22. Kevin Cronin kicked an extra points and Jake Fisher caught a conversion pass.
Alpena's Josh Campbell threw a 15-yard scoring strike to Tyler Kirkwood, but West countered with an 81-yard TD by Shafer, then Fisher intercepted a screen pass and took it 40 yards to paydirt and Cody Scheuerman's 3-yard TD run made it 59-30.
Austin Leeck had an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, and Cronin ended the scoring with a 33-yard field goal.
In the first half, West's scores came from a Shafer 4-yard run, Brett Kenny's 20-yard pass from Isaiah Hackney and an Andrew Schaub 8-yard run. Alpena tied the game going into halftime on a Leeck 4-yard run with 16 seconds left.
TC West gains 485 yards rushing and limited the Wildcats to 73. Shceuerman ran for 53 yards on nine carries, Kenny gained 62 yards on seven attempts and Saunders added 75 yards in 10 rushes.
Defensively, the Titans were led by 11 tackles from Kenny, 10 by Morgan Tolle and nine from Don Cizek. Colin Richards also had an interception.
