Boomers snap Bums’ win streak

Loss snaps Traverse City winning streak

TRAVERSE CITY — Schaumburg was able to salvage the final game of a series with Traverse City, scoring five times in the ninth inning to earn a 10-7 victory.

The loss snapped Traverse City's six-game winning streak and allowed the Boomers to avoid a sweep.

The Boomers scored five runs — all earned — off Traverse City closer Scott Mueller on five hits, including a Chad Mozingo three-run home run.

Traverse City countered with one run in its half of the ninth on a Sean Gusrang double that plated Kyle Colligan, but no more.

The Beach Bums had a 6-3 lead after scoring three runs in both the third and fourth innings.

Ryan Still belted a two-run homer in the third, and Jeff Flagg singled in Chase Burch. In the fourth, Colligan came across after an error on a Kyle Eveland hit, and Brian Heere singled in Marcus Nidiffer and Eveland.

Colligan was 3 for 5 on the night to raise his batting average to .294, while Still, Heere and Gusrang each had two hits. Still had two walks to reach base four times in five plate appearances.

Kurt Wunderlich gave up five earned runs in as many innings and struck out six, but after three scoreless innings of relief work by Nick Capito and Matt Miller, the Beach Bums went into the ninth with a 6-5 lead.

Traverse City has the day off Monday before hosting back-to-back home series against Joliet and Windy City. Joliet (35-43) is fifth in the West Division, while Windy City (46-31) is atop the West. The Bums (50-28) have a four-game lead in the East Division and own the league's best record.

Reid Kelly (7-3, 3.98) is slated to start on Tuesday against the Slammers.
