TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Central opened up the postseason with a 45-32 district victory over Alpena, the third time this season the Trojans have defeated the Wildcats.
Katie Knudsen scored 13 points and Ali Walker nine for Big North Conference runner-up Central (12-9).
Courtney Holmes and Dana Salesman had eight each for Alpena.
Central will host Marquette on Wednesday. The Redettes topped the Trojans 52-46 in a December meeting on Central's floor.
Class B districts
Ludington 59 Kingsley 49
For the second straight year, Kingsley lost to Ludington in an early matchup of two top Class B teams.
The Orioles won 59-49 this time around in a matchup of teams entering the game with identical 19-1 records.
"It looked a heckuva lot like last year," Kingsley coach Matt Shelich said. "They were just a little better than we were."
The Stags were just 8 of 18 from the free-throw line.
The Stags were led by Emily Fasel's 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Tyler Rawlings added 11 points and Autumn Goggin 10.
D'Erika Varenhorst led Ludington with 18 points.
Cadillac 39 Benzie Central 23
Cadillac outscored Benzie Central 14-2 in the fourth quarter to pull away to a 39-23 Class B district win over Benzie Central.
The Vikings had a 25-21 lead entering the final eight minutes.
Katlyn Agren and Mary MaRae Baker each scored 10 points for Cadillac.
Jordan Nye had 15 points, six rebounds and three steals for Benzie (14-7).
Class C districts
Kalkaska 67 Forest Area 30
Sophy Menestrina and Kelli Guy combined for 46 points as Kalkaska defeated Forest Area 67-30 in a Class C district opener at Manton.
Menestrina finished with 24 points and seven rebounds while Guy had 22 points, 10 assists and three steals.
Jamie Myas contributed 14 points, eight rebounds and six steals.
The Blazers (18-3) will play Mesick on Wednesday.
Emily Gonyer netted nine points and Marissa Ingersoll seven for the Warriors (8-13). Kortni Birgy pulled down 12 rebounds.
Charlevoix 58 East Jordan 56
Sydney Carlson scored 19 of her game-high 22 points in the second half as Charlevoix pulled out a 58-56 district win at East Jordan.
The two teams split a pair of games during the season.
The Rayders led 28-15 at half and then pushed the lead to 18 early in the third period. The Red Devils surged back and went ahead by three in the fourth quarter.
Carlson hit six 3-pointers. Jenna Way added 21 points and nine rebounds. She scored 18 in the first half.
Jordan Bachus netted 17 for East Jordan.
Charlevoix (8-13) faces Harbor Springs on Wednesday.
Glen Lake 56 Suttons Bay 33
Scotlyn Brengman scored 20 points in Glen Lake's 56-33 Class C district opener against Suttons Bay.
The Lakers (15-6) move on to play Manton on Wednesday.
Brengman also had seven rebounds while Taylor Martin had 11 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Sophie Ewing added seven points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Miranda Schaub led the Norse with 13 points.
McBain 82 Harrison 15
McBain handled Harrison in an 82-15 victory in the Class C district opener.
The Ramblers (20-1) play host Farwell Wednesday.
Annemarie Hamlet led the way with 19 points and eight assists while Meredith Hamlet had 18 points and eight assists. Maddie Barnett had 11 points, Kaitlyn Bronkema had nine points and Caitlin Blake had seven points.
Joburg 40 Inland Lakes 30
Johannesburg-Lewiston moved on in the Class C district with a 40-30 win over Inland Lakes.
The Cardinals (19-2) will play host Oscoda on Wednesday.
Brittany Cherwinski had 11 points, eight rebounds and four steals for Joburg while Tiffany Nickert had nine points, four rebounds and made some key free throws. Abby Schlicher had seven points, five rebounds, five steals, six assists and five blocks while Hannah Huff had 11 rebounds.
Morgan Hanel had 11 points for the Bulldogs.
BOYS HOOPS
LL St. Mary's 70 GT Academy 31
Nick Shaffran scored 18 points in Lake Leelanau St. Mary's 70-31 win over Grand Traverse Academy.
Connor Pobuda also scored 16 points for the Eagles (9-10) while Joe Pendergast had 13 points.
St. Mary's plays Elk Rapids on Thursday.
Forest Area 72 Onaway 51
Forest Area overcame an early 12-2 deficit by not turning the ball over in a 72-51 Ski Valley Conference victory over Onaway.
The Warriors (8-10, 7-9 SVC) committed a season-low nine turnovers in the make-up game win.
Jermaine Nix scored 27 to lead the way, while Justin Burke added 17 points and 10 rebounds, Austin Vance had 11 points and nine boards and Ryan McGee dished out six assists in addition to nine rebounds.
Kyle Moreau led Onaway with 13 points.
