FARWELL — From Staff Reports
Glen Lake and Traverse City Central finished second in their respective golf regionals on Thursday, qualifying for next week's state finals.
For the Lakers, it'll be their first trip to the finals as a team in school history. For the Trojans, it'll be their 15th trip in the last 16 years.
Glen Lake was second in the Division 4 regional at Farwell's Eagle Glen with a 407. Grayling won the title with 405 despite cold and difficult conditions.
"We played the same course two weeks ago and won the Farwell Invitational, which was the first time we had won an invitational," Lakers coach Paul Christiansen said. "I'm really proud of the girls. Last year at the same regional, we were 14th out of 14 teams."
Glen Lake sophomore Melanie Kulanda and junior Nicole Pace each shot 97. Skylar Gleason added at 105, Madison Hill a 108 and Brianna Flores a 115.
Central played in Division 2 regional at the Flint Elks Club and shot 368. Flushing was five shots better at 363.
Trojans senior Courtney Dye was overall medalist with a 4-over 76. Ally Schultz shot a 95, Abby Palisin a 98, Amelia Pezzetti a 99 and Nonie Tompkins a 105.
The weather was sunny, but winds presented a challenge.
"We've been playing in the wind for the last few weeks, so I think that gave us an advantage over some of the other teams," Central coach Lois McManus said. "(Before the state finals) We're going to be working a lot on the short game and spending a lot of time on the range."
The Lakers will play at Michigan State's Forest Akers West while the Trojans will play at Grand Valley State's The Meadows.
In Division 1 in Grandville, Traverse City West finished fourth with a 401. Titans sophomore Taylor Kehoe qualified for the state meet as an individual with a 90.
Laura Krieber shot a 97, Emily Dean 99 and Amanda Gross 115 for West.
