ALPENA — Traverse City West made Friday's long hockey trip worthwhile.
The Titans came back from Alpena with a 4-1 Big North Conference over the Division 3 No. 9-ranked Wildcats.
"It was our most complete game of the year," West coach Jeremy Rintala said. "We got the forecheck going early and were able to get traffic out front and were able to bang a few home."
The Titans never trailed in the game, going up early on a John Linenger goal off a Jake Saxton assist 9:54 into the first period.
Nick Schultz and Saxton made it 3-0 after two periods, with Ryan Roehler, Jeff Linenger, Alec Carruth and Schultz drawing assists.
Ryan Basel tacked on a third-period goal off a Nick Featherstone assist.
Carter Edmondson made 21 saves for West, which outshot Alpena 39-22. West plays Traverse City Central next Wednesday.
"We're getting better and better and heading in the right direction," Rintala said.
HOCKEY
Midland Dow 5 Bay Reps 2
Midland Dow scored three unanswered third-period goals to notch a 5-2 win over the Bay Reps.
The Reps had tied it up 2-2 on Nick Sicinski's short-handed goal off a Zach Hill assist.
Sicinski had their first goal as well, scoring a power-play marker off a Nate Wilson set up.
Jay Jones made 19 saves for the Reps, who host Tri-Valley today at 1 p.m. at Centre ICE.
BOYS HOOPS
Alpena 59 TC Central 54
Luke Cordes led Alpena with 20 points in a 59-54 Big North Conference win over Traverse City Central.
The Trojans (1-3, 1-1 BNC) were paced by Taylor Cook's 14 points, while Ethan Pilarski and Tanner Kenny each had 13 points.
Alpena won the JV game 45-31, despite 10 points from Central's Jackson Schrameyer.
The Trojans won the freshman game 48-25, led by 16 points from Alex Everts and 11 by Mason Houston.
Petoskey 38 Cadillac 33
Erik Davenport scored 16 points as Petoskey topped Cadillac 38-33 in the Big North Conference opener for both teams.
Quinn Ameel added 10 points for the Northmen (4-0, 1-0 BNC).
Nick Paquet had eight points and Ben Mackey seven for the Vikings (3-1, 0-1 BNC), who travel Tuesday to Traverse City West.
TC Christian 63 GT Academy 26
Kris Crosby's 18 points and 10 rebounds propelled Traverse City Christian to a 63-26 win over Grand Traverse Academy.
A.J. Weber added 16 points for the Sabres.
Alex Houston led GT Academy with seven points.
Grayling 72 Harbor Springs 57
Tyler McClanahan led four Grayling players in doubles in a 72-57 Lake Michigan Conference victory over Harbor Springs.
He scored 18 points, with Justice Junttila adding 15, Scott Parkinson 14 and Jake Swander 12.
Spencer Kloss had 21 and Neal Zoerhof 10 for the Rams.
Grayling (3-0, 1-0 LMC) travels Tuesday to Elk Rapids.
Charlevoix 51 Boyne City 40
Charlie Hamilton's 16 points led Charlevoix in a 51-40 Lake Michigan Conference win over Boyne City.
Tanner Catt added 14 points and Zach Hankins had 10 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks.
Elk Rapids 43 East Jordan 41
Adam Trautman's steal led to a Shae Somers three-point play with 15 seconds left to give Elk Rapids a 43-41 win over East Jordan.
Somers, Austin McMullen and Trautman each scored 10 points for the Elks (3-1, 1-0 LMC), who host Grayling on Tuesday.
Isaiah Sladick had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Red Devils (2-1, 0-1), who host Harbor Springs on Tuesday.
Manton 49 Lake Leelanau SM 29
Alex Powell scored a game-high 15 points to lead Manton to a 49-29 non-conference game with Lake Leelanau St. Mary's.
Keith Brotherton added nine points, Austin Shivlie grabbed nine rebounds and Jordan Finkle had seven steals.
The Rangers (3-0) host Lake City on Tuesday.
Mike Farese led St. Mary's with seven points.
Burt Lake NMCA 49 Northport 48
Aaron Chatfield scored all but 15 of Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Academy's points in a 49-48 win over Northport.
Chatfield netted 34 points, while Robert Taylor added eight points and 12 rebounds and Josiah Fosmore grabbed nine boards. The Eagles (2-1) host Brimley on Monday.
Northport was led by Zach Kalchick's 26 points and 11 from Bill Stowe. The Wildcats (1-4) host Grand Traverse Academy on Tuesday.
GIRLS HOOPS
TC Central 62 Alpena 45
Tyler Rawlings put up 20 points as Traverse City Central got into the win column with a 62-45 Big North Conference victory over Alpena.
Madi Bankey added 13 points and Lauren Lozowski seven for the Trojans (1-3, 1-0 BNC).
Central won the JV game 55-39 behind 13 points from Carrie Wynkoop and 11 by Ashley Reed.
The Trojans also won the freshman game, 43-22. Jennifer Rose scored 14 points.
TC West 47 Ogemaw Heights 21
Katie Placek's 19 points propelled Traverse City West to a 47-21 Big North Conference victory over Ogemaw Heights.
The Titans started the game off with 16-4 run and led by 17 at halftime, 29-12.
Lauren Ellison grabbed six rebounds for the Titans (1-3, 1-0 BNC).
West's JV team won 30-28, with Kalyn Haven scoring 10 points.
The freshmen lost 38-32, despite 20 points by Makenna Mattson and 13 rebounds from Abby Moyes.
Cadillac 45 Petoskey 38
Kaitlyn Agren led Cadillac with 11 points and Hannah Baker chipped in 10 in a 45-38 win over Petoskey.
Megan Thompkins paced Petoskey with 13 points. The Northmen host Kingsley on Monday for a Title IX 40th anniversary throwback game.
TC St. Francis 44 Kalkaska 36
Traverse City St. Francis held Kalkaska's supporting cast in check in a 44-36 Lake Michigan Conference victory.
Kelli Guy scored 29 of the Blazers' 36 points.
Lauren Buckel led the Gladiators with 14 points, while Liza Erickson and Bridget Bussell each had nine.
The Glads (4-1, 1-0 LMC) host Boyne City on Tuesday.
Kalkaska won the JV 47-44, despite 13 points by Suzanna Britten and nine by Brooklyn Barber.
TC Bulldogs 52 Lake Leelanau SM 39
Casie Plamondon rang up 23 points, seven steals and five rebounds in the Traverse City Bulldogs' 52-39 victory over Lake Leelanau St. Mary's.
Sarah Plamondon added 12 points, six rebounds and six steals, while Molly Plamondon had 10 points for the Bulldogs (6-1).
Rachael Thon scored 11 of her 15 points in the first half to pace St. Mary's.
Elk Rapids 50 East Jordan 46
Elk Rapids used a balanced scoring attack to notch a 50-46 Lake Michigan Conference win over East Jordan.
Rachel Hintz and Michelle Costa each scored 12 points, while Paige Granger and Brittany Trout had eight apiece for the Elks (2-2, 1-0 LMC).
Val Peters led the Red Devils with 22 points.
Grayling 66 Harbor Springs 45
Hailey Whittaker and Maddie Benardo led Grayling to a 66-45 victory over Harbor Springs to open up Lake Michigan Conference play.
Whittaker scored 11 points and Benardo added 10 points, nine rebounds and four steals for the Vikings (3-0, 1-0 LMC), who travel Tuesday to Elk Rapids.
Katie Barkley scored 21 points to lead Harbor (2-3).
Leland 41 Mesick 35
Leland held Mesick scoreless in overtime to ring up a 41-35 Northwest Conference victory.
Caitlin McKee had 13 points and four steals for the Comets (1-4), while Libby Munoz added 11 points, four assists and eight rebounds.
Chrissy Spoor scored nine points to lead Mesick.
Maggie Osorio and Maddie Trumbull had field goals and Whitney Schaub sank a pair of free throws in the overtime session after regulation ended with both teams at 35 points.
Benzie Central 43 Frankfort 26
Benzie Central held Frankfort scoreless in the secodn quarter en route to a 43-26 Northwest Conference win.
The Huskies led 19-6 at halftime.
Jordan Nye led Benzie (4-2, 2-0 NWC) with 16 points and three steals, while Paige Sauer added nine points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Aleah Hunt paced Frankfort (1-1 NWC) with nine points.
Glen Lake 49 Buckley 39
A 15-4 second-quarter run led Glen Lakes to a 49-39 Northwest Conference victory over Buckley.
Jordan Peplinski led the Lakers (5-2, 2-0 NWC) with 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Katie Stowe added 14 points and three steals.
Jessica Lee chipped in seven points, six rebounds, four assists and five steals, whiel Maddy Brown grabbed 15 rebounds.
Bailee Kuhn led Buckley (2-3) with 16 points, hitting four 3-pointers in the second half. Jordan Barley added 15 points and 15 rebounds and Clarice Pahl grabbed 14 rebounds.
Kingsley 57 Suttons Bay 17
Autumn Goggin scored almost half of Kingsley's points in a 57-17 Northwest Conference victory over Suttons Bay.
Goggin ended up with 27 points and eight steals.
Kenzie Meeker added 12 points and Amanda Youker had eight points and eight boards.
The Stags (5-1, 2-0 NWC) travel Monday to Petoskey. Beedoskah Stonefish led Suttons Bay with eight points.
Bellaire 47 Forest Area 32
Bellaire remained undefeated overall and in Ski Valley Conference play with a 47-32 win over Forest Area to set up a showdown with Johannesburg-Lewiston.
The Eagles (4-0, 3-0 SVC) and Joburg are the only undefeated Ski Valley teams remaining, and they face off in Bellaire on Tuesday.
Mariah Cords led Bellaire with 13 points, eight rebounds and four steals, while Mackenzie Ciganick had 11 points, four steals and five rebounds, knocking down three 3-pointers.
Forest Area was led by Emily Gonyer's 11 points and three steals, while Lydsey Czuk added seven points and nine rebounds and Kortni Birgy had six points and nine boards.
Onaway 36 Inland Lakes 31
Onaway survived playing with a short bench to post a 36-31 Ski Valley Conference win over Inland Lakes.
With both starting guards out because of the flu and an ankle injury and three other players out with the flu, the Cardinals (4-2, 2-2 SVC) were led by Mariah Ehrke's 11 points and 13 rebounds. Megan Estep added 12 rebounds.
The Bulldogs were led by Sarah Kold's 13 points and 11 from Sandi Bischoff.
McBain 65 Manton 34
McBain jumped out to a 24-8 lead in a 65-34 Highland Conference win over Manton.
Meredith Hamlet led the Ramblers with 28 points and eight assists, while Kara Houston chipped in six points, six rebounds, six assists and six steals. Keiana Westdorp added six points and nine rebounds. Tara Baker led Manton with 13 points.
Lake City 43 Evart 30
Lake City (5-0, 2-0 Highland) rallied from a five-point third-quarter deficit to post a 43-30 victory over visiting Evart. The Trojans outscored Evart 22-6 in the final eight-and-a-half minutes of the game.
Junior Maggie Eising (14) and freshman Laraiah Schichtel (13) were in double figures for Lake City. Eising also notched five steals and Schichtel had seven boards. Buffy Buttis scored eight, grabbed eight boards and blocked six shots.
Mara VanOrder scored 15 for Evart.
WRESTLING
Mancelona ties as 2nd L.P. team at Bridge Brawl
Mancelona went 2-3 to finish second among the five Lower peninsula teams at the Rudyard Bridge Brawl.
The event features five teams from the Upper Peninsula and L.P. competing against each other.
The Ironmen posted wins over Munising (36-33) and Newberry (36-30), falling to Manistique, Sault Ste. Marie and Rudyard.
Tristan Water posted a 5-0 record to win the 215-pound weight class crown. He's 11-2 so far this season.
Micah Burroughs (160) and Roman McDaniels (112) were each 3-2 to place third.
Noah Burroughs (130) won two matches, and Michael Meadows (135) and Keegan Richardson (285) were each 1-0.
Traverse City Central defeated Newberry 32-24 to finish 1-4 for the day.
James Westenbarger posted a 3-2 record, while Josiah Lopez-Wild was 3-1. Justice Korson, Jennifer Long, Daniel Steele and Sean Monnier each notched two victories.
The Trojans host Frankfort, Mason County Eastern and TC St. Francis on Wednesday.
