Roundup: Trojans capture Up North Invite

TRAVERSE CITY — Host Traverse City Central won seven flights to claim the Up North Invite on Thursday.

The Trojans had 38 points, followed by Petoskey (24), Traverse City West (23), TC Central's B (17) and Cadillac (17).

Central swept singles with Fisher Sutherland, Hunter Bergsma, Max Lundmark and Caleb Morgan. Sutherland beat TCC B 6-3, 6-2 in the final while Bergsma topped Cadillac (6-2, 6-3), Lundmark beat Petoskey (6-3, 6-3) and Morgan beat Petoskey (6-3, 6-1).

In doubles, the Trojans took three flights. Chris Heimburger/Peter Pappas beat TCC B (6-3, 6-0), Clark Phelps/Spencer Potter beat TC West (6-3, 6-0) and Daniel Fedor/Philip Hanawalt topped Petoskey (6-2, 4-6, 10-6).

TC West was champion with Jacob Diss and Graeme Placek at No. 2 doubles. They beat TCC B 6-2, 6-2 in the final.

Elk Rapids     2 Charlevoix     1

Elk Rapids improved to 2-0 in the Lake Michigan Conference with a 2-1 win at Charlevoix.

Jesse Starr and Zach Vandeveer tallied for the Elks (5-1-1 overall). Starr scored off a throw-in by Vandeveer.

Boog Nitchman netted the Charlevoix goal late in the second half.

The Elks had a 15-10 shots on goal advantage. Coach Nate Plum credited goalie Mitch Gribi with a "phenomenal" game. Greg Manning, Dan Parish, Ian Baughman and Austin McMullen also starred.

Benzie Central     8 Pine River     0

Benzie Central scored four goals in the game's first five minutes en route to an 8-0 non-league win over Pine River.

Brandon Baesch led the Huskies with four goals and two assists. Sam Hahn added two goals and an assist. Hayden Clark and Zach Perry contributed solo goals. Clark also had two assists while Harold Romero and Michael Draeger had one. Paul Dumas recorded the shutout in goal.

Burt Lake NMCA      11 Cheboygan      3

Paul Chatfield had a breakout game as Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Academy mercied Cheboygan 11-3.

Chatfield scored five goals for the Eagles (6-1) and also tallied two assists.

Also scoring for Burt Lake NMCA were Aaron Chatfield with four goals and two assists, Jake Lovitt with a goal and Stephen Thompson with a goal and five assists.

Robert Taylor, Andrew Vandeyacht and Will Lovitt led the defense.

Suttons Bay     1 Ludington     1

Evan Glowicki's second-half goal gave Suttons Bay a 1-1 tie with Ludington.

The Orioles scored in the first half on a penalty kick.

Ludington outshot Suttons Bay (2-0-1) 20-18.

"Jared Orban had a fantastic game in goal," Suttons Bay coach Randy U'Ren said. "He had some big saves early. He kept us in it."

Guoynes ties for fourth at Ann Arbor Invite

Traverse City Central's Chelsea Guoynes tied for fourth with a 76 in the Ann Arbor Pioneer Invitational.

The Trojans finished 11th in the 19-team field with a 377. Traverse City West shot a 394.

Saline won the event with a 335. Rochester Hills Stoney Creek's Gabby Yurik earned medalist honors with a 73.

In addition to the 76 by Guoynes, Courtney Dye fired a 92, Kelly White a 102 and Rachel Jurik a 107 for the Trojans.

For West, Sara Reese shot 89, Jessie Thomas 98, Laura Krieber 103 and Kali Sanford 104.

Cadillac captures Ogemaw Heights Invite

The Cadillac boys won the Ogemaw Heights Invitational, beating Traverse City Central 48-61.

Charlevoix, led by individual champion Eric Buday (17:14), finished third with 71.

Central put its seven runners in the top 21. Adam Waggoner took sixth (18:13), Josh Rose seventh (18:16), Joe Friedli 12th (18:27), Nicholas Tarsa 17th (18:46), Max Johnson 19th (18:50), John Ackley 20th (18:51) and Josh Mazure 21st (18:52).

"We ran strong," Central coach John Lober said. "Cadillac was just the better team today."

The Trojans compete in the Brother Rice Invitational next.

Gladiators edge Central JV Black

St. Francis won its own invitational, edging the Traverse City Central JV Black 19-17.

Harbor Springs took third with 11 points and Leelanau fourth with one point.

Flight winners for St. Francis included: Blake Bandrowski at No. 2 singles, Mike Elliott/Patrick Wilson at No. 1 doubles, Chris Miller/Briggs Richmond at No. 2 doubles and Paul Bandrowski/Brendan Barnes at No. 4 doubles.

Harbor Springs' Sam Dart captured No. 1 singles, Central's Marc Habermann and Trey Pezzetti No. 3 and No. 4 singles, and Central's Chris Hicks/Alex Hushak No. 3 doubles.

St. Francis JV Gold     5 Cadillac JV     3

The St. Francis JV Gold won three singles flights en route to a 5-3 win over the Cadillac JV.

Victorious for the Gladiators: Cole Gringras (7-6, 6-0), Evan Primeau (6-1, 6-1), Max Rysztak (6-2, 6-3), Christian Tremp/Corey Boudrie (6-3, 6-3) and Noah Phillips/Jeff Summers (6-2, 6-1).

Pellston     3 Inland Lakes     0

Pellston opened Ski Valley Conference play with a 25-5, 25-18, 25-17 win over Inland Lakes.

The Hornets (19-4) were led by Shelby Hughey and Tayler Friend with 11 kil1s and Spencer Niersel 9. Samantha McNitt added 30 assists.

Glen Lake splits pair of matches

Glen Lake edged Northport 15-25, 25-15, 15-12 and lost to Pine River 26-28, 17-25.

The Lakers were paced by Casey Hawkins (43 assists, two kills, three blocks, three aces, 14 digs), Sara Popp (30 digs), Brooke Taylor (two blocks, 10 digs, 18 kills, six aces), Marriah Sobczak (two blocks, four kills, 20 digs, one ace), and Kelsey Caswell (10 blocks, 17 kills, two digs).

Manton came back for a five-set non-conference win over Buckley.

The Rangers won 21-25, 19-25, 25-19, 28-26, 15-7.

Buckley had 14 kills from Paige Gokey and eight kills from Courtney Heitmeyer.
