THOMPSONVILLE — Kueny opens defense of title

Laura Kueny opens defense of her Michigan Women's Open title today at Crystal Mountain Resort.

The Whitehall native and Michigan State alum shot a 5-under 211 to win by three strokes a year ago. It was her first professional win.

Kueny, 24, is currently playing her second full year on the Symetra Tour, the LPGA's official developmental tour.

Kueny will lead a field of 66 players in the three-day, 54-hole event — the 10th year it's been held at Crystal.

Three former champions are entered — Allison (Fouch) Duncan, Connie Ross and Suzanne Green-Roebuck. Former LPGA Tour players Sue Ertl and Cindy Figg Currier are in the field, too.

Traverse City skier schusses to Utah

Rowmark, one of the premier ski programs in the United States, is getting one of Traverse City’s top skiers in Madison Ostergren, who has been accepted to compete with the prestigious academy and attend Rowland Hall College Prep School in Utah beginning this summer.

31st annual Bayshore Marathon today

Races: Marathon starts at 7:15 a.m.; half marathon begins at 7:30 a.m.; 10K starts at 7:30 a.m.; all races begin at College Drive and finish on the Traverse City Central High School track.

Runners ready for Bayshore

Aside from the race packet pick-up, scheduled to take place today from 5 until 9 p.m. at Traverse City Central High School, no one would even know that in fewer than 24 hours more than 7,000 runners will have descended on Traverse City for the 31st running of the Bayshore event, which includes a marathon, half-marathon and 10K.
