Glen Lake pulls away from Liberty

Barrett nets 2 goals in season opener

TRAVERSE CITY — Experience won out Wednesday.

Glen Lake, with 11 players back off a team that lost just two games last season, scored three second-half goals to pull away to a 4-0 win over Traverse City Liberty in a season-opening contest at the Keystone Soccer Complex.

The Liberty started five freshmen.

"They're a great team," Liberty coach Chris Batchelder said. "I'd be surprised if they don't win our district. Honestly, they're probably better than some of the Division 1 teams around here.

"We lost seven or eight starters. We knew it was going to be rough. But we came out and played hard. Effort was not an issue. We start five freshmen, which is very rare at the varsity level. Overall, I thought we did very well."

Glen Lake led 1-0 at half on a Samantha Thompson goal. Ty Fessell made it 2-0 with 26:36 when she converted a pass from Casey McDonough.

"I was wide open," Fessell said. "It was a good pass. I felt confident about it (shot). It felt good."

Elle Barrett added the final two goals.

"It's a great start for us," Lakers coach Meg Murphy said. "We're very excited. We have 16 girls on the team. We've got a lot of seniors, a lot of talent. For the first game — against Liberty, a big rival — it's good to have a turnout like this."

Fessell, one of the returning veterans, agreed.

"It's nice to win the first game," she said. "We played very well as a team,. It feels good."

Sophie Ewing was in goal for Glen Lake.
