KINGSLEY — For the first time in the Dana Allen era, Benzie Central beat Kingsley.
In came in Saturday’s championship match of the Kingsley Invitational, as the Huskies beat the Stags 25-19, 25-21.
The Huskies (14-2-1) split with Pine River (25-17, 24-26) in pool play, but then fired off wins over Elk Rapids (25-13, 25-13) and Buckley (25-17, 25-12) before topping Houghton Lake (25-5, 25-10) and TC Christian (25-17, 25-8).
Benzie’s Sara Thurkettle (38 kills, 13 blocks, 10 digs) and Haeley Melton (35 digs, 17 kills, six blocks, 10 aces) made the all-tournament team. Jenna Scheele had 23 kills, Madison Lutzke had 29 kills, Amy Syrocki had 19 digs and seven aces, Abby Secor had 37 digs and Raenee Harig had 102 assists.
The Stags (10-4-3) split in pool play with TC Christian (23-25, 25-12) but beat Houghton Lake (25-15, 25-10) and Kalkaska (25-19, 25-16). They beat Elk Rapids (25-7, 25-22) and Pine River (25-22, 14-25, 15-11) in bracket play.
Kingsley’s Emily Fasel (45 kills, 41 digs, seven aces) and Lexi Benton (33 kills, 45 digs) made the all-tournament team. Katie Travis had 21 kills, AnneMarie Sanchez had 79 assists and 28 digs, Amy Sevenski had 22 kills and 22 digs, Brittany Nickerson had 43 digs and Kasha Tulppo was 45-for-45 serving.
Traverse City Christian made it to the semifinals before falling to Benzie. The Sabres (9-4-2) topped Kalkaska (25-23, 25-15) and Houghton Lake (25-21, 25-16) in pool play, splitting with Kingsley (25-23, 12-25).
Christian beat Buckley 25-19, 25-6 in the quarterfinals.
The Sabres were paced on the day by Callie Kostrzewa (29 kills, 13 aces), Abbie Voorheis (28 assists), Jessica Mauer (six digs), Katie VanVreede (20 kills) and Alisha Bultsma (11 kills, five digs, four aces).
TC Central claims Leland Invitational
Traverse City Central bounced back from a pool-play loss to Leland to top the Comets in the final of their own tournament, winning 25-12, 25-12 to capture the Leland Invitational crown.
The Trojans downed Suttons Bay 25-13, 25-14 in the quarterfinals and got by Charlevoix 25-19, 27-25 in the semis. In pool play, Central lost to Leland 21-25, 25-21, 16-17 and beat Northport and Grand Traverse Academy in straight sets.
The Trojans were led by Nina Radakovich (19 kills, 25 digs, 7 aces), Brie Goodno (21 kills, 12 digs, four aces), Katie Fallick (nine kills, eight aces, 24 blocks), Brittany Bell (77 assists, five aces), Melina Bonaccini (11 kills, 17 digs, six aces), Brianna Podsaid (17 kills, three aces) and Chelsea Saunders (29 digs).
The Trojans (15-3) host TC West on Wednesday.
Leland also topped GT Academy and Northport in pool play before bracket wins over Frankfort (25-18, 25-11) and Glen Lake (25-15, 25-17) to set up a finals rematch with Central.
The Comets (10-6) were paced by Elizabeth McKee (75 kills, 40 digs, 16 assists), Hanna Schaub (six kills, 126 assists, 17 digs, 12 aces), Maggie Osorio (66 digs, three aces) and Andrea Hunt (48 kills, 14 aces).
Charlevoix finished third at the meet.
The Rayders (8-2-1) beat Glen Lake (25-13, 25-22), Frankfort (25-10, 25-14), and Suttons Bay (25-12, 25-15) in pool play and GT Academy (25-14, 25-10) in the quarterfinals. TC Central then beat them 25-20, 27-25.
Jenna Way had 77 assists, 33 digs and 24 kills for Charlevoix, Katie Mays had 24 kills and 16 digs while Kelly Greybreiehl had 14 digs.
Warriors 2nd in tourney
Forest Area fell in the finals of the McBain Northern Michigan Christian Invitational.
The Warriors breezed through their first four matches in straight-set wins over Big Rapids Crossroads, Pentwater, Manton and McBain NMC before a 25-13, 20-25 split with Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart.
Forest Area (8-5-2) topped Crossroads again in the semifinals, this time needing three sets, before a 23-25, 17-25 setback to Sacred Heart in the title match.
The Warriors were led for the day by Savannah Daniels (60 kills, 13 blocks, six aces), Marissa Ingersol (20 kills, 52 digs), Camila Tornow (nine aces, 31 kills, 44 digs), Katie Johnson (93 assists), Courtney Birgey (32 digs), Rachel Daniels (15 digs) and Tabitha Cecil and Addie Dutton with solid floor games.
TENNIS
Trojans claim out event
Traverse City Central won 21 of 24 matches to claim the Traverse City Central Invitational.
The Trojans ended with 21 points to Detroit Jesuit’s 13, followed by Grand Rapids Forest Hills Eastern (10) and Traverse City Central JV Black (four).
In singles, Fisher Sutherland, Hunter Bergsma and Caleb Morgan each posted 3-0 marks, as did the doubles flights of Chris Heinburger/Pater Pappas and Patrick Colburn/Mark Jones.
Max Lundmark and doubles tandems Clark Phelps/Spencer Potter and Sam Sanderson/Ben Greenman were each 2-1.
The Trojans host TC West on Wednesday.
West 2nd at own meet
Muskegon Mona Shores won the TC West Invite with 20 points while the Titans were second with 17.
West won No. 3 doubles with Tyler Harris and Max Hughes (6-7, 6-0, 7-5), as well as No. 4 with Sam Sanderson and Ben Greenman (6-4, 4-6, 6-4). Both beat Mona Shores.
The Titans were runner-up at 2-3-4 singles with Chris Howse, Lee Batcha and Andrew Baker, as well as the top two doubles flights with Matt White/Nick Tooley and Jacob Diss/Graeme Placek.
Elk Rapids wins JV meet
Elk Rapids scored 18 points to win a JV meet in Traverse City.
The St. Francis Blue had 16 points, Central’s Gold had nine and TC West’s JV had five points.
The Elks won all four singles flights with Donnie Fedrigon, Kyle Hoover, Josh Mosher and E.J. Campbell.
St. Francis took the top three doubles flights with Hunter Rose/Dan Wilson, Alex Grombala/Sean Leonard and Mike Kirby/Kolter Hornyak.
West won No. 4 doubles with John Lineger/Logan Hisem.
CROSS COUNTRY
Pinckney takes meet at Benzie Central
Pinckney won boys and girls Red Division at the 20th annual Eldon Moss Invitational at Benzie Central.
In the boys’ meet, TC West was second while Benzie was fourth. The Huskies were third in the girls’ meet while Michaela Carnegie was second in the race.
The White Division was won by Evart in the boys’ race and Bear Lake in the girls.
In the JV race, TC Central’s Dylan Flesher won in 18:14.
