TRAVERSE CITY — Scott Dunn had a lights-out performance Monday night at Wuerfel Park.
The Traverse City right-hander pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits, as the Beach Bums beat the Road Warriors 3-0 in a Frontier League game called after eight innings when the lights went out during a dazzling lightning show and then rain moved in. The lightning started in the sixth inning.
Dunn, though, made lightning-quick work of the Road Warriors in improving to 3-2. After surrendering two singles to the first three batters he faced, Dunn retired the next 15 Warriors. At one point, he struck out five in a row. The seven-inning outing, and six strikeouts, tied career highs.
The Beach Bums, who sport a league best 42-24 record, scored single runs in the second, fifth and eighth innings.
Catcher Marcus Nidiffer was the hitting star for Traverse City. His double in the second scored Sean Gusrang for the game's first run. He then belted his fifth homer of the season to add an insurance tally in the eight.
Jeff Flagg singled in Ryan Still in the fifth. Flagg barely missed two home runs in the contest on drives down the line that were ruled foul.
The Beach Bums lead the league in home runs with 82. Jose Vargas set a team single-season mark with his 24th Sunday night.
Still drew two more walks, raising his season count to a league-high 75.
Shawn Marquardt, making his professional debut, gave up one run in four innings for the loss.
The Beach Bums, who host Windy City tonight in the first of three games, finished with nine hits. Nidiffer and Gusrang led the attack with two hits.
Matt Miller pitched the eighth, giving up two infield singles, to record the save.
Jacob Clem (4-4) will get the call tonight for Traverse City. He'll be opposed by Blayne Weller.
The Beach Bums released pitcher Dave Deminsky, who took the loss in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader.
