TRAVERSE CITY — Southern Illinois came to Traverse City trailing the Beach Bums by four games in the East Division.
Now, it's only three games.
The Miners held Traverse City to six hits on Friday for a 4-1 win at Wuerfel Park.
The teams will play again today at 7:05 p.m.
Southern Illinois took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, made it 3-0 in the fourth and led 4-0 after five innings.
The Beach Bums scored their only run in the seventh inning when Ryan Still walked, stole second base and came home on a Jose Vargas two-out double.
Brooks Belter suffered his second loss of the season for Traverse City, giving up eight hits and three earned runs in 4.1 innings. Michael Devine and Jake Sabol — both recent additions to the team — closed the game in relief. Sabol threw the last two innings with no hits, a walk and two strikeouts in his Beach Bums debut.
Cody Hall moved to 6-0 for Southern Illinois with the win. Brandon Cunniff struck out the side in the ninth inning for his first save with the Miners.
Sean Gusrang was the standout at the plate for Traverse City with three hits.
