Trojans win title

TRAVERSE CITY — It was an all Traverse City final Saturday in the Traverse City Central Volleyball Invitational.

The host Trojans beat St. Francis 25-16, 25-5 to claim the crown.

Central finished 6-0-1 on the day.

In pool play, the Trojans beat Glen Lake (19-9, 19-6), Buckley (19-12, 19-13), split with Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes (19-14, 18-20), and beat Traverse City Christian (19-2, 19-9).

In bracket play, Central downed Benzie Central (25-15, 25-16), Pine River (25-21, 25-15) and St. Francis.

The Trojans were paced by Brie Goodno (51 kills, 18 digs, seven aces), Leah Potter (37 digs, three aces), Maddy Duensing (112 assists, 11 aces), Jessie Kushner (22 kills, 10 digs, six aces), Kiley Kowal (20 kills, seven blocks, six aces), Callie Bartkowiak (35 kills) and Paige Emmott (24 digs, two aces).

St. Francis, which went 5-1-1, split with Ludington (25-23, 21-25) and then topped Frankfort (25-14, 25-15) and Benzie Central (25-14, 25-19) in pool play. In bracket play, the Gladiators defeated Glen Lake (25-12, 25-13), Ludington (25-20, 18-25, 16-14), Walled Lake Central (25-22, 16-25, 15-12) before falling to the Trojans.

Starring for the Gladiators: Bridget Bussell (14 blocks, 54 digs, 70 kills, eight aces), Madeline Rysztak (10 blocks, 44 digs, 25 kills, 11 aces), Olivia Hardy (12 blocks, six aces), Kaitlyn Hegewald (eight blocks, 31 digs, 92 assists, six aces) and Laura Kirchofer (33 digs, seven aces).

Traverse City Christian finished 2-3. The Sabres defeated Buckley (19-11, 19-10), lost to Traverse City Central (2-19, 9-19) and Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes (9-19, 14-19), beat Glen Lake (19-11, 19-11) and lost to Elk Rapids (19-25, 16-25).

Christian was led by Laura Murray (eight kills, one dig, 26 of 26 serving with six aces), Amanda Ufer (seven kills, three digs, six aces) and Lauren Webb (three digs, two aces).

Comets finish 2-1-1 at St. Phil

Leland opened its season by reaching the quarterfinals in the 24-team Battle Creek St. Philip Invitational.

The Comets (2-1-1) split with Kalamazoo Central (25-10, 23-25) and beat Fowler (25-16, 25-15) and Quincy (26-24, 25-8) in pool play. Leland fell to Goodrich (25-23, 21-25, 11-15) in the quarterfinals.

"It was a good showing for this early in the season," Comets coach Laurie Glass said. "We're learning about ourselves."

The Comets were paced by Brooke Olesnavage (26 kills, 15 aces, 14 digs), Maggie Osorio (48 digs), Andrea Hunt (12 kills, seven assists, 15 digs), Sammie Sterkenburg (two kills, two aces, 41 assists, five digs), Caitlin McKee (27 assists, seven digs) and Felicia Whittaker (12 kills, three aces).

Leland is at Northview on Tuesday.

Kingsley reaches the semifinals

Kingsley reached the semifinals of the Pellston Invitational before losing to the host Hornets 25-19, 20-25, 7-15.

Kingsely finished 5-1-1 on the day.

In pool play, the Stags beat Harbor Springs (25-13, 25-10), Central Lake (25-17, 25-13), East Jordan (25-14, 25-16), split with Onaway (22-25, 25-19) and beat Cheboygan (25-17, 25-21).

In the quarterfinals, Kingsley edged Forest Area (17-25, 27-25, 16-14).

Leading the way: Katie Travis (62 kills, 59 of 61 serving, five blocks), Andrea Lee (19 kills, 14 of 14 serving, two blocks), Leah Hall (nine kills, 124 assists, 42 of 42 serving, 24 digs), Lilly Travis (18 kills, 46 digs, 55 of 56 serving), Katie Garey (35 digs), Linsey Weber (56 of 58 serving, 40 digs) and Kenzie Meeker (21 kills, 65 digs).

Forest Area went 2-3-1. In pool play, the Warriors lost to Boyne City (13-25, 12-25) and Charlevoix (18-25, 20-25), beat Inland Lakes (25-21, 27-25), split with Pellston (19-25, 25-17) and beat Harbor Light (25-21, 25-13). In the quarterfinals, Forest Area dropped a three-setter to Kingsley.

The Warriors were led by MVP Tabitha Cecil (37 kills, 30 digs, four blocks), Kourtni Birgy (28 kills, 27 digs, six aces), Emily Gonyer (30 digs, 13 kills), Alyssa Birgy (21 digs), Megan Gifford (14 digs, 103 assists) and Jackie Hyatt (12 kills, four blocks).

Leland takes title in Boynton Invite

Dylan Jolliffe scored three goals and Matt Fleis two as Leland captured the Boynton Invitational with an 8-2 win over Charlevoix in the championship match.

Luke Nesbitt, Omar Roman and Mike Osorio also scored for the Comets.

Leland reached the title game with a 4-1 triumph over Reed City. Jolliffe netted three goals in that game as well. Roman scored the other. Mike Farese was in goal both games for the Comets, who travel to Harbor Light on Tuesday.

Charlevoix beat Manistee 4-0 in its opener.

Reed City blanked Manistee 5-0 in the consolation game.

Titans start 2-1, Central 0-3

Traverse City West opened its season by finishing 2-1 in the Traverse City Soccer Invitational.

Traverse City Central wasn't quite as fortunate, ending the day 0-3.

The Titans beat Ann Arbor Skyline 1-0, lost to Warren De La Salle 1-0 and then downed Clarkston 3-2.

"It was a good start," Titans coach Jason Carmien said. "All three (opponents) are quality Division 1 teams."

Brandon Montgomery scored in the first half, off an assist from his brother Dan, to notch the winning goal against Skyline.

De La Salle scored in the first two minutes of the middle game and then held that lead to edge the Titans.

West grabbed a 2-0 lead and never looked back in beating Clarkston. Christien Geiger led off the scoring, assisted by Tim Taylor. Dan Montgomery made it 2-0. Brad Richey drew the assist. After Clarkston closed the gap to 2-1 just before half, Josh Stiglich scored what proved to be the game-winning goal off an assist from Taylor. Justin Kraft was in goal for all three games.

Central fell to Clarkston 3-1. The game was tied 1-1 at half. Owen Stratton tallied for the Trojans off an assist from Noah Mitchell Ward.

Central then dropped a 2-0 decision to Skyline and a 4-0 contest to De La Salle.

TENNIS

Gladiators claim TC West Quad

St. Francis won three doubles flights en route to claiming the Traverse City West Quad.

The Gladiators finished with 17 points, Holt 16, Kalamazoo Loy Norrix 8 and West 6.

For St. Francis, Blake Bandrowski and Patrick Burke took No. 2 doubles, defeating Holt (6-1, 6-2), Loy Norrix (6-1, 6-1) and West (6-0, 6-2).

Chase Richmond and Evan Primeau captured No. 3 doubles, downing West (6-2, 6-1), Holt (6-3, 6-4) and Loy Norrix (6-1, 6-1).

Cole Gingras and Jay Jones teamed to win No. 4 doubles, upending Loy Norrix (6-0, 6-1), Holt (6-2, 6-3) and West (6-3, 6-4).

St. Francis took second in three singles flights — Sam Holmes at No. 1, Jack Krcmarik at No. 3 and Corey Boudrie at No. 4. All finished 2-1.

The Gladiators host a four-team invitational Tuesday.

Northville captures TCC Kickoff

Northville's Tyler Gardiner showed why he's the defending Division 1 state champion at No. 1 singles.

Gardiner lost just two games in winning all three of his matches as Northville claimed the Traverse City Central Kickoff Invitational.

The Mustangs edged Central 19-17 for the title. Jenison placed third (8) and Holly fourth (4).

Northville won all four singles flights. Central won four doubles flights — one on a tiebreaker.

At No. 2, Sean Soupiset and Cam Young defeated Northville (6-4, 6-1), Holly (6-1, 6-1) and Jenison (6-2, 6-0).

At No. 3, Max Knoblock and Nick Yergens topped Holly (6-2, 6-3), Northville (6-0, 6-1) and Jenison (6-2, 6-1).

At No. 4, Trey Pezzetti and Yani Beeker downed Jenison (6-3, 6-1), Northville (6-2, 6-2) and Holly (6-0, 6-2).

Central's Hayden Drury and Caleb Heimburger finished in a three way tie at No. 1 doubles, but won the tiebreaker (fewest sets lost). Drury and Heimburger beat Jenison (6-1, 6-4) and Holly (6-1, 6-0), but lost to Northville (6-3, 3-6, 8-10).

The Trojans picked up two wins apiece from Daniel Fedor and Parker Berden at Nos. 3 and 4 singles. Peter Pappas and Sklyer Norgaard won one match apiece at Nos. 1 and 2 singles.

CROSS COUNTRY

St. Francis runners star at Glen Lake

Kalkaska's Isaac Spann edged St. Francis' Mark Mol 11:21.7 to 11:21.9 to win a two-mile race at Glen Lake.

The girls race was not nearly as close as St. Francis freshman Holly Bullough came in at 12:35. Glen Lake's McKenna Turrel was second at 13:47.8.

Team scores were not kept.

But the Gladiators did well in both. St. Francis had six in the top nine in the girls race. In addition to Bullough, Lauren Buckel placed fourth (14:00.3), Maddie Danz fifth (14:06.4), Krissi Dressler sixth (14:11.0), Erin McDonnell eighth (14:41.2) and Annie Lyman ninth (14:48.9). Glen Lake's Kaitlin Grigg finished third (13:50.5).

For the boys, St. Francis had seven in the top 16. In addition to Mol, Connor Archer took seventh (12:39), Nick Fisher 10th (12:55.3), Mike Connolly 13th (13:33.8), Matt Mawby 14th (13:38.4), Andy Fitzpatrick 15th (13:38.5) and Lance Masserant 16th (13:40.9).

St. Francis will compete at Hesperia on Wednesday.

The girls field will include host Hesperia, the defending Division 4 state champs, and Saugatuck, which finished third.
