Kalkaska native helps clinch playoff

TRAVERSE CITY — Kalkaska grad Travis Schuba and the Madonna University men's basketball team rallied from a 14-point deficit to pull off a 52-48 come-from-behind win over Aquinas College at the Activities Center on Saturday to clinch a home playoff game in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship Tournament next week.

Schuba scored 14 points to lead the Crusaders.

He hit 5 of 11 shots, including 3 of 8 from behind the 3-point arc. The sophomore added five rebounds and three assists, and was the only Madonna player over 28 minutes, logging 37.

Schuba leads the Crusaders (18-12, 12-6 WHAC) in scoring at 15.5 points a game, adding 3.7 rebounds, 1.3 steals and shooting 43.9 percent from 3-point range and 91.5 percent from the free-throw stripe.

No. 3 seed Madonna hosts sixth-seeded Concordia University on Wednesday to open the WHAC tournament.

-  Lehigh forward Holden Greiner (TC St. Francis) is battling a sprained ankle. The junior has scored only six points in the Mountain Hawks' last four games, one of which he sat out entirely. He grabbed eight rebounds in that span and hit just 2 of 15 shots from the field.

-  Drake has lost three of five games since junior forward Ben Simons (Cadillac) left the lineup with mononucleosis. Simons is out indefinitely.

-  The University of Rochester and Loren Wagner (TC West) split four games and have one regular-season contest remaining. The sophomore center averaged 7.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in the games, starting three of those for the Yellowjackets (19-5).

-  Dylan Roe (TC Central) and Stephen Wheelock (Suttons Bay) have been a bit of a dynamic duo off the bench for Olivet College. The Comets (4-21, 2-12 MIAA) ended the season with an 81-74 loss to Calvin in which Roe scored six points and Wheelock had five points in six minutes. Roe added 21 points in two other contests, while Wheelock was instant offense again in his only other appearance of the final three games, scoring three points in four minutes.

-  Jasmine Hines (Central Lake) grabbed five rebounds in just as many minutes as Michigan State topped Wisconsin 62-46 on the road Thursday.

-  Rick Jones (Benzie Central) chipped in 16 points and 14 rebounds over three contests for Siena Heights, which snapped an eight-game losing skid with a 61-59 victory over Michigan-Dearborn on Saturday.

-  Maria Blazejewski (Benzie Central) continued her strong season at Lake Superior State, scoring 57 points and grabbing 14 rebounds as the Lakers (10-14) won two of their last three games.

-  Ashley Bauman (Manistee) had five points and nine rebounds in a 55-49 win over Adrian on Saturday.

-  Aaron Olsen (TC West) had eight points and five rebounds in Concordia University's one-point loss to nationally-ranked Indiana Tech on Saturday.

-  Kerby Tamm (Petoskey) had six points and three rebounds in 10 minutes off the bench in Central Michigan's 66-60 win over Buffalo on Feb. 11.

-  Taylor Bugent (Benzie Central) started and had seven rebounds and four assists as Albion topped Olivet 69-45 on Saturday, playing a team-high 33 minutes. In 25 games (six starts), Nugent is averaging 6.9 points a game for the Britons, fourth on the squad, and shooting nearly 40 percent from the 3-point line. Albion travels to Hope for the first round of the MIAA tournament Thursday. Nugent led the team with 10 rebounds in a 63-39 win over Kalamazoo College on Wednesday.

-  Mary Schlicher (Johannesburg-Lewiston) has been Alma College's best bench player in the Scots' last two games. Schlicher chipped in nine points, nine rebounds (five offensive), three assists and two blocks in 23 minutes in a 60-53 win Saturday over Trine, and 10 points, seven rebounds and a block in 29 minutes of a 63-51 setback Wednesday to Alma.

-  Ferris State has moved up to the No. 1 ranking nationally after sweeping Notre Dame and Bowling Green over the last two weekends to clinch at least a share of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season title. Garrett Thompson (TC Central) had a goal and an assist in the 5-1 win Friday over the Falcons and picked up an assist in the two-game against the Fighting Irish.

-  Sean Burke (TC West) had a goal and two assists as Finlandia clinched its first-ever conference hockey playoff berth, despite ending the season on a four-game skid. The Lions travel to play Lawrence University in the MCHA quarterfinals on Feb. 24 and 25.

-  Will Weber (Gaylord) was +1 in each of the three games he played as Miami posted a 4-0 mark with sweeps of Alabama-Huntsville and Notre Dame. The senior defenseman blocked nine shots in the wins, but missed the first Alabama contest as the result of a fight in the final minute of a 3-0 loss to Michigan on Feb. 4.

-  Nate Peterson (Cadillac) set up St. Mary's University's game-tying goal in a 4-4 deadlock with Gustavus Adolphus.

-  Adrian's ACHA Division I men's hockey team captured the 2012 GLCHL tournament championship with a 3-1 win Sunday over regular-season champion Oakland. Matt Zaremba (Gaylord) and the Bulldogs rode a hot streak into the tournament and won three straight games with a Friday 6-3 win over Western Michigan and a 6-0 Saturday win over Davenport. Zaremba has 14 points in 36 games for the Bulldogs.

-  TC Central alums Eric O'Hearn and Eric McLintock advanced to the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association semifinals as Wisconsin-Eau Claire swept two games from Wisconsin-River Falls to move on. They'll face St. Norbert on Saturday.

-  Alison Shrift (TC West) scored a power-play goal in Wisconsin-Superior's 4-3 victory over Wisconsin-Eau Claire, helping the Yellowjackets win two of their last three contests. Superior (15-7-3) closes out the regular season with a two-game set against St. Norbert this Friday and Saturday.

-  Jenna Corbin (Indian River) and Adrian's women's hockey team have won nine straight games after a 5-8-2 start to improve to 14-8-2. Corbin has three points in 22 games and is among the team's +/- leaders.

-  Madison McLachlan (TC Central) placed 12th for St. Olaf University out of 73 skiers in an FIS race at Spirit Mountain, Minn.

-  Jesse Smith (TC Central) placed 12th to help Michigan Tech's ski team place third in the NCAA Central Regional Championship on Saturday.

-  Southern Methodist and Rachel Reid (Glen Lake) moved up to No. 8 in the national equestrian rankings.

-  Alma College senior Jordan Newhouse (TC West) placed in several events in the MIAA Championships. Newhouse led the Scots to a third-place finish in the 400 medley relay, fifth in the 200 freestyle relay and sixth in the 200 medley relay.
