McClary wins MIAA honor for 4th time
OLIVET -- Bellaire native and Olivet College junior center Michael McClary won the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Player of the Week for men's basketball for the fourth time this season
It is the sixth time in his career he has earned the honor.
McClary helped the Comets win two MIAA games last week. In a 67-64 win at Hope College Jan. 13, he posted his eighth double-double -- 22 points and 15 rebounds -- of the season. McClary also blocked five shots and did not commit a foul or turnover in 37 minutes. He followed that with 23 points and eight rebounds in an 85-80 victory against Trine (Ind.) University Jan. 16. McClary blocked one shot to raise his career total to 109, which ties the Olivet all-time record.
For the season, McClary leads the team and league in scoring (18.7 per game) and rebounding (10.9 per game). His eight double-doubles also tops the MIAA.
Finch places fifth in Winterfest sled race
KALKASKA -- Ryan Finch of Williamsburg placed fifth in the Adult 4-Dog Speed class at the Kalkaska Winterfest sled race on Sunday.
Finch finished the 9.6-mile course in 30:53.
The race is sanctioned by the International Sled Dog Racing Association and counts towards the International Championship Series.
Blizzard tourney deadline Jan. 21
TRAVERSE CITY -- The registration deadline for the YMCA Blizzard basketball team tournament is Thursday, Jan. 21.
The tournament for boys in seventh and eighth grades will be Jan. 30 at Traverse City area gyms. There will be separate divisions for the two grades.

Centre ICE to hold skating clinic
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Twin Bays Skating Club will host a free Learn to Skate Clinic and Exhibition on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City.
The event includes a free 30-minute group lesson and skate rental. Members from the skating club will perform short programs.
Following the exhibition, skaters and their families will be invited back on the ice for a free open skating session.
Pre-registration for the clinic is encouraged. Contact the skating club at 947-2267 or e-mail twinbays@live.com. The event is open to children and adults of all levels, ages 3 and up. Pre-school age children must bring a helmet to participate in classes.
Taghon memorial ride set for Jan. 31
EMPIRE -- The Roy Taghon Memorial Snowmobile Ride will be held Jan. 31 at the Empire Airport.
The event starts at 1 p.m. and proceed to Benchwarmers in Maple City, with chili and hot dogs being served at about 2:30 p.m.
All proceeds will go to the Roy Taghon Scholarship Fund, which provides an annual music scholarship at Glen Lake High School.
This will be the third organized snowmobile ride to honor the memory of Empire resident Roy Taghon, who was killed in a snowmobile accident in 2008.
