Roundup: Northport beats GTA in 4 OTs

Placek's hot start leads TC West past Gaylord

Bill Stowe hit a jumper with two seconds left to give Northport a 64-62 quadruple-overtime boys basketball victory over Grand Traverse Academy on Thursday.

Stowe ended the game with 24 points, and Forrest Rogers added 23.

Each team finished the contest with four players due to foul trouble. Northport was down to four by the third overtime, while the Mustangs hit that mark with a minute remaining in the fourth extra session.

Alex Houston paced GT Academy with 25 points, Dan Lock added 14 and Mitch Drilling racked up 11 points, nine blocks and 20 rebounds.

Northport led 11-6 after one quarter, but GT Academy battled back to take a one-point lead after three periods, 27-26.

The Mustangs (2-3) host the Petoskey Barnstormers on Monday. Northport (2-5) hosts Traverse City Christian on Tuesday.



BOYS HOOPS

TC West 62

Gaylord 46


Graeme Placek came out firing for Traverse City West on Thursday in a 62-46 Big North Conference win over Gaylord.

Placek scored 17 of his 23 points in the first quarter, as the Titans (6-3, 3-2 BNC) built a 21-6 lead.

Trevor Commissaris led all scorers with 27 points, 13 rebounds, two blocks and a steal. He was 13-for-16 from the field.

For TC West, Donny Cizek had a good floor game with six assists while Jeremiah Williams and Zach McGuire led the defense.

Troy Gahn had 17 for the Blue Devils.

TC West’s JV won 60-33. The Titans (5-4, 4-1 BNC) had 14 points from Tristan Roman, 11 points from Alex Scott and seven points, five rebounds from Jonny Wheelock.

Gaylord’s freshmen won 67-38. The Titans (6-2) had six points from Austin Cleary.



Benzie Central 51

Suttons Bay 47


Benzie Central handed Suttons Bay its first Northwest Conference loss with a 51-47 victory.

The Norsemen (6-2, 3-1 NWC) led 28-25 at the half, but the Huskies (3-4, 3-1 NWC) went on an 8-0 run in the third quarter to take the lead.

Cory Taylor led Benzie Central with 23 points. Mason Darling had 15 for Suttons Bay while Greg Banks scored 12.



Leland 56

Frankfort 50


Leland built an 18-point halftime lead and held on to defeat Frankfort 56-50 to be part of the four-way tie atop the Northwest Conference.

The Comets (4-2, 3-1 Northwest) had a big night from A.J. Whittaker, as he scored 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Paul Bardenhagen added 11 points and Sawyer Scott chipped in eight points and 10 rebounds.

Owen Stratton led Frankfort with 12 points, and Connor Bradley scored nine of his 10 points in the Panthers’ fourth-quarter rally.

The Comets host Glen Lake next Thursday.



Glen Lake 52

Kingsley 40


Glen Lake built up a 40-25 lead through three quarters before holding on to beat Kingsley 52-40.

The Stags battled back to within five points with three minutes left, but Glen Lake was able to survive the surge thanks to timely free throw shooting.

Mike O’Brien led Glen Lake (5-4, 3-1 NWC) with 18 points, Carter Lee scored 15 and Tyler Stachnik added nine. The Lakers host Leland on Thursday.

Kingsley (2-5, 1-3 NWC) were paced by 17 points and six rebounds by Jack Ocobock, and Rachi Sims added 11 points. The Stags travel Tuesday to Cadillac to face a Vikings team that escaped with a one-point win last year on a John Simons buzzer-beater.



Buckley 70

Mesick 45


Buckley only dressed six players, but managed a 70-45 Northwest Conference win over Mesick.

The Bears (4-3, 1-3 NWC) had 29 points from Evan Chalker while Jake Larsen added 16 points. Senior Zak Chilson also had nine points and seven rebounds.

Andre Whittaker led Mesick with 14 points.



Bellaire 58

Gaylord St. Mary 33


Gus Meriwether’s game-high 20 points led Bellaire to a 58-33 Ski Valley Conference victory over Gaylord St. Mary.

Reese Koepke scored 13 and Mitch Teetzel eight for the Eagles.

Pat Switalski had 10 points for the Snowbirds.

Bellaire (8-0, 5-0 Ski Valley) hosts fellow Ski Valley co-leader Pellston on Tuesday.



Forest Area 58

Mancelona 57


Forest Area hit a shot in the last 10 seconds for a 58-57 Ski Valley Conference win over Mancelona.

The Warriors (4-3) led 56-55 late when Mancelona’s Brandon Dingman hit a 15-footer for a 57-56 lead. With 7.5 seconds left, the Warriors ran a play and Bob Steile hit a lay-up for the win.

Steile had 26 points for Forest Area while Jermaine Nix added nine points.

Dingman led the Ironmen with 24.



Central Lake 63

Joburg 47


Central Lake got it going early in a 63-47 Ski Valley Conference win over Johannesburg-Lewiston.

The Trojans (4-4) jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and made it 32-18 at the half.

Senior point guard Wyatt Kemnitzer led the way with 26 points, including four 3-pointers. Pat Sutherland also had 11 points for Central Lake.

Joburg had 11 points from Chris Nagy.



Manton 52

Evart 37


Manton rolled to a 52-37 Highland Conference win over Evart.

The Rangers (4-3) led 21-16 at the half, but made it 40-19 going into the fourth quarter.

Mike Skiver and Dean Farve each had 15 points in the win. Skiver also had five rebounds and five assists.



McBain 53

Lake City 27


McBain improved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the Highland Conference with a 53-27 victory over visiting Lake City, handing the Trojans their first loss of the season.

Point guard Jared Larr scored 11 to pace the Ramblers’ balanced offense while Derek Vongphasouk and Nathan Smith each hit for 10 and Hunter Thompson and Logan Nemeth each scored six.

McBain led 14-4, 29-11 and 45-15 at the quarter breaks.

Ryan Vincent tallied 10 for Lake City (7-1, 2-1) from the backcourt, including a 3-pointer, and forward Adam Williams tallied six.



Manistee Catholic 61

Walkerville 33


Manistee Catholic moved to 5-1 in the West Michigan D League with a 61-33 win over Walkerville.

Zach Bialak had 28 points and four steals for the Sabers while Nathan Pappas and Jesse Miller each scored 10 points. Miller had four assists and Andrew Perry added five steals.

Sam Sweet led Walkerville with 13 points.



Burt Lake NMCA 81

Kinross Maplewood 48


Paul Chatfield had a triple-double as Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian topped Kinross Maplewood Baptist 81-48.

Chatfield had 19 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds, while David Thompson scored 23 points, Aaron Chatfield had 17 points, 12 assists and eight steals and Will Lovitt scored 11 points.

The Eagles (5-0) travel Thursday to Wolverine.



GIRLS HOOPS

Elk Rapids 62

Lake Leelanau SM 51


Megan Gregorski’s 26 points led Elk Rapids to a 62-51 non-conference victory over Lake Leelanau St. Mary’s.

Brittany Trout added 10 points for the Elks.

Taylor Moore had 24 points and 11 rebounds for St. Mary’s, while Rachael Thon had 19 points and 14 boards. The Thunderbirds (1-8) play the Traverse City Bulldogs on Jan. 20.



WRESTLING

St. Francis wins pair

of duals convincingly


Traverse City St. Francis won Lake Michigan Conference dual meets over Elk Rapids and Boyne City.

The Gladiators topped the Elks 75-4 and Boyne 78-0.

Double winners for the Glads were Eric Wales (103 pounds), Trica Martin (112), Ryan Will (119), Zach Schaub (125), Mike Ostrom (130), Isaiah Schaub (145), Jack Jamieson (152), Nick Kester (160), Luke Mingee (171), Alex Pacardat (189), Haydn Wilson (215) and Jake Khoury (285).

St. Francis heads to the Rockford Invitational on Saturday, where the Glads will face off with potential playoff foe Hesperia and Isaiah Schaub (22-0) could meet Division 1 No. 1-ranked Angelo Latora of Portage Central in a battle of top-ranked wrestlers. Schaub is No. 1 in Division 4 at 135 pounds.



HOCKEY

Cheboygan 8

Northwest Warriors 0


Cheboygan posted an 8-0 win over the Northwest Warriors at Centre ICE.

John Garst and Hunter Filice scored first-period goals for the Chiefs (11-1-1) before Cheboygan busted loose for six second-period scores. Jake Elmore and Eryn Eustice scored two each, and John Grantner and Jordan Yost each had one.

Caleb Wood made six saves for the Chiefs.
