HOLLAND -- Traverse City West will swim in four events in today's Division 1 state finals.
Elly Maleski led the Titans by qualifying for three events in Friday's preliminary races, including the 200 medley relay with teammates Shelby Newhouse, Sarah Brunner and Meghan Cepela. The quartet combined for a time of 1:52.10 in the event, moving up from being seeded 17th to the 10th position.
The top 16 in each event moved on to today's finals.
Maleski also moved on in the 50 freestyle in 25.6 seconds to place 16th after being seeded 30th and in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.19, finishing ninth after being seeded 17th. Cepela finished the 50 free in 26:12.
Newhouse was West's final qualifier, finishing the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.75 to place 15th, the same spot where she was seeded.
Brunner was 23rd in the 100 butterfly with a personal-best time of 1:00.7 to place 23rd. She was seeded 28th.
The 200 free relay team of Brunner, Newhouse, Cepela and Kirsten Palmer was 25th in 1:44.06, moving up from its 31st seed spot.
Today's finals begin at noon.
