HOCKEY

Trenton 5

TC Central 2

Trenton showed why it's ranked No. 1.

The No. 1-ranked team in Division 2 handed Traverse City Central a 5-2 setback in a matchup of Trojan teams ranked in the top 10.

Trenton took a 2-0 lead by the time 7:42 had ticked off the clock.

Central's Jared VanWormer answered with an unassisted goal to bring his team within a goal at 2-1 at the 11:25 mark of the first.

Trenton then went up 5-2 before Central's Max Schrank scored off a Caleb Morgan assist in the third period for the game's final score.

"Trenton is a good team, holy cow," Central coach Chris Givens said. "They come at you fast and move the puck.

"That was by far the best team we've seen this year, and I don't know we'll see any better. That No. 1 ranking is not a mistake."

Central (3-4, 2-0 Big North Conference) was outshot 40-18, with freshman goalie Bill Vermetten making 35 stops.

TC West 4

Alpena 0

Traverse City West handed Alpena its second loss of the week to a TC team, blanking the Wildcats 4-0.

Nate Wilson stopped all 12 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season as the Titans overwhelmed Alpena 41-12 in shots on net.

Leading 2-0 going into the third period, Alex Grizzel and Zach Franklin scored 17 seconds apart early on to give the Titans a comfortable 4-0 cushion. Gabe Hisem, Mitch Snider and Chris Dienes assisted on the goals.

Shane Totten gave West a 1-0 advantage 14 minutes into the first period and Snider struck with a power-play goal set up by Hisem in the second.

TC Central beat Alpena 4-3 in overtime on Friday.

Central and West (4-1) play each other Tuesday in their first meeting of the season, a make-up of their Dec. 9 game postponed due to inclement weather. Both are 2-0 in the Big North Conference, putting more emphasis on the rivalry contest.

"Our teams are pretty similar," West coach Jeremy Rintala said. "They match up pretty well. The last few times we've played, it's been really close."
