EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Sean Gusrang's three-run, eighth-inning blast gave Traverse City its first lead since the first inning as the Traverse City Beach Bums topped Evansville 8-7 on Thursday.
Gusrang capped off a five-run eighth with the three-run shot. Chase Burch had plated two earlier in the frame with a single to score Ryan Still and Brian Heere.
Gusrang's shot came off Otters' All-Star closer Eric Massingham to extend Traverse City's winning streak to four.
Scott Mueller closed the door on Evansville, pitching the final 1.2 innings — including a 1-2-3 ninth — to get the Bums out of town with a three-game sweep.
Kyle Eveland and Burch had three hits each, while Heere and Vargas both had two.
The Otters led 4-2 after the first inning. Kyle Colligan singled in Heere and Vargas for the Bums' runs.
Evansville tacked on two more in the sixth to lead 6-2.
Travis Higgs walked with the bases loaded in the seventh for TC's first run since the opening frame.
Brooks Belter gave up six runs — five earned — in 5.2 frames of work. He struck out five and walked three.
Jake Sabol came on for 1.1 frames of scoreless relief for his first professional victory in just his second appearance since being signed out of Central Michigan University.
The Beach Bums return home today, hosting the Schaumburg Boomers. Scott Dunn (4-3, 3.38) takes the mound for Traverse City against the Boomers' Adam Champion (5-4, 2.55).
