LEROY — Kalkaska scored with 20 seconds remaining for a 31-26 season-opening win over host Leroy Pine River on Friday.
The Blazers (1-0) trailed 26-25 late when Zach Hill completed a 75-yard drive with an 8-yard TD pass to Zach Robinson.
Hill ran six times for 70 yards for two scores and also was 7-for-11 passing for 91 yards and two TDs. Brandon Washburn ran seven times for 49 yards and a touchdown.
Kalkaska hosts Suttons Bay next week.
Elk Rapids 39 Mancelona 0
Derek Sentieri ran for 185 yards and three touchdowns to power Elk Rapids to a 39-0 win over Mancelona.
Sentieri, who only carried the ball 10 times, scored on runs of 40, 32 and 10 yards. Deric Wilcox, who finished with 57 yards in five carries, had a 5-yard scoring run in the first quarter to get the Elks on the board.
Quarterback Andrew Troutman completed 4 of 7 passes for 93 yards and a score. He hooked up with Emilio Bocardo on a 60-yard touchdown pass in the first half. David Schaefer added a 1-yard scoring run for the Elks.
Elk Rapids finished with 298 yards on the ground.
Zeth Wheelock and Tyler Wells led the Elks defensively with 13 and 12 tackles, respectively.
Glen Lake 39 East Jordan 0
Glen Lake rushed for 280 yards and five touchdowns en route to a 39-0 season-opening win over East Jordan.
Five different players scored on the ground — Parker Kokowicz, Elliot Clark, Tita Leon, Hunter Brengman and Jake Johnston. Clark also returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown.
Clark led the rushing attack with 68 yards on 10 carries. Brengman added 61 yards in 11 trips while Johnston picked up 60 yards in seven attempts.
Mike Hubbell led the defensive charge with nine tackles. Brengman and Mike Sawyer were in on six and five stops, respectively. Fremont 35 Kingsley 22
Kingsley got behind early and couldn't come back as Fremont earned a 35-22 non-conference win.
The Packers (1-0) took the opening kickoff to the 1-yard line and led 21-0 in the first quarter. It was 28-8 at the half.
Max Lajko led the Stags (0-1) with 11 carries for 171 yards and all three touchdowns. He had a two-point conversion while quarterback Jack Ocobock hit Austin Nagy for the other two-pointer.
Joe Leach had 15 solo tackles for Kingsley while Zach Ackerman had 11 solos. The Stags host Elk Rapids on Thursday.
Suttons Bay 29 Royal Oak Shrine 14
Suttons Bay capitalized on turnovers for a 29-14 non-conference win over Royal Oak Shrine.
The Norsemen (1-0) only turned the ball over once while the Knights gave it away three times.
Noah Reyhl scored two first-half touchdowns for Suttons Bay for a 14-0 lead. Then in the third quarter, David Horton hit Craig Send on an 18-yard score and it was 22-0. In the fourth, Aiden Keilty had a 4-yard run to complete the scoring.
Reyhl ran 19 times for 116 yards and Horton was 3-for-5 for 41 yards. For total offense, the Norse had 276 yards and Shrine had 185.
Defensively, Keilty had 14 tackles, Reyhl and Hudson Parrent each had eight while Layton Korson had an interception.
Frankfort 22 Marion 7
Frankfort scored a 22-7 non-conference win over Marion.
The Panthers (1-0) trailed 7-6 in the second quarter, but closed out the game with 16 unanswered points.
Quarterback Cam MacArthur got Frankfort on the board first with a 29-yard pass to Kyle Slade. Then in the second quarter, he gave the team the lead with a 1-yard sneak for a score and hit Slade for the two-point conversion.
In the third quarter, Zach Terwilliger ran in a 36-yard TD while MacArthur found Slade for the two-point conversion to finish the scoring.
MacArthur was 8-for-11 passing for 140 yards, Nick Tondu ran for 80 yards and Slade had five catches for 90 yards. Alex Hallan had 15 tackles while Joe Nugent made 11.
McBain 28 Boyne City 14
McBain had two long scoring plays in the first half and an 18-play, 96-yard scoring march in the second half to help secure a 28-14 victory over host Boyne City.
The visiting Ramblers led 20-6 at halftime. A 91-yard touchdown pass from junior Jared Larr, making his first varsity start, to senior halfback Cody King on a circle route out of the backfield broke open a close game and gave McBain a two-touchdown lead late in the second quarter.
McBain senior Logan Nemeth, who led all rushers with 137 yards in 18 carries, scored on a slashing 63-yard run at the 6:34 mark of the second quarter to break a 6-6 tie and give McBain a lead it would not relinquish. Nemeth also scored McBain's first touchdown on a 1-yard run.
After a defensive stop inside the 5-yard line early in the third quarter, McBain helped to ice the game with its nine-minute, 96-yard scoring drive capped by a 6-yard toss from Larr to Travis Reidel with 10:24 left to play. It was the only pass in the drive, which featured a fourth-down conversion and three third-down conversions.
"We only used three plays on that drive," said McBain coach Chad Grundy. "The line did a great job up front and Nemeth, King and Larr ran really hard. We just wore them down. It feels great to finally win here. Boyne City's a great program and their kids battled hard."
Boyne City scored on the ensuing drive when senior fullback Brandon Darrah capped an eight-play, 40-yard drive with a 5-yard plunge. Quarterback Jay Redman's two-point run made it 28-14 with 7:51 to go but the host Ramblers would not find the end zone again.
Darrah also scored in the first half on an 11-yard run after James O'Brien's 38-yard punt return provided good field position. Darrah led Boyne with 40 yards in 11 carries and also led defensively with 11 tackles. Redman hit on 10 of 20 passes for 103 yards with Dustin Field grabbing five for 39 yards. O'Brien had an interception and a fumble recovery.
Larr hit on 4 of 5 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns and he also had 76 yards rushing in 11 tries. King led McBain with 11 tackles and defensive end Trace Hughston had six tackles and a sack.
St. Ignace 13 Charlevoix 6
St. Ignace stymied a late Charlevoix drive to beat the Rayders 13-6.
Charlevoix had the ball inside the Saints' 5 in the final minutes but came away empty-handed.
St. Ignace led 13-0 at half.
Charlevoix got on the board in the third quarter on a 5-yard run by John Boss.
Boss led the Rayders with 91 yards on 20 carries. Quarterback Andrew Potter completed 7 of 13 passes for 98 yards. Gunnar Zipp led the Rayders defensively with seven tackles.
Central Lake 13 Johannesburg 6
Ian Beal threw two second-half touchdown passes to rally Central Lake to a 13-6 Ski Valley Conference win at Johannesburg-Lewiston.
Beal connected with Gus Meriwether on a 10-yard strike late in the third quarter, then found Zach Patton on a 18-yard toss to seal it.
The Central Lake defense, led by Mike King's 12 tackles, held the Cardinals to one first down in the second half.
Johannesburg struck in the first half on a 10-yard run by Brian Van Coillie.
It stayed 6-0 until Beal and Meriwether connected. King converted to make it 7-6.
King led the Trojans ground game with 88 yards. Beal passed for 50 yards, but had four interceptions — two by Brett Kortman.
Forest Area 22 Inland Lakes 14
Ron Falls scored on a 66-yard wingback reverse with 50 seconds remaining to give Forest Area a 22-14 Ski Valley Conference win over Inland Lakes.
The Bulldogs drove to the Forest Area 28 in the final seconds, but Ryan Burke intercepted a pass in the end zone to end it.
Down 8-0 in the first half, the Warriors tied it on a 65-yard scoring pass from Jared Caldwell to Victor Woodham.
Down 14-8, Forest Area tied it again in the second half on a 10-yard run by Tom Hall.
Petoskey 21 Marquette 14
Petoskey traveled to Marquette and earned a 21-14 win over the Redmen.
The loss extended Marquette's losing streak to 20 games.
The Northmen (1-0) will host West Branch Ogemaw Heights next week.
