MAPLE CITY — With leading scorer Mike O'Brien bottled up, Glen Lake turned to its supporting cast Thursday night in posting a 65-33 non-conference win over Manistee.
Junior Carter Lee connected on four 3-pointers in scoring a season-high 19 points for the Lakers, now 5-1. Another junior, Logan LaCross added 12 points, 10 in the first half when Glen Lake built a 31-17 cushion.
O'Brien, a 6-4 senior who came into the game averaging 23 points, was held to two field goals and 12 points.
It didn't matter, though. The Lakers had other weapons on this night.
"We're going to see a lot more teams double- and triple-team Mike," Glen Lake coach Todd Hazelton said. "And why wouldn't you? He's averaging 23 a game."
Lee knocked down 11 of his points in the third quarter. His spurt included three 3-pointers that extended Glen Lake's lead to 21, 44-23, at the end of three quarters.
"It's a new year," Lee said. "I was feeling good."
Manistee, which had closed to within 10 earlier in the third quarter, could not recover after Lee's barrage.
"It was great to see Carter play like that," Hazelton said. "He had a breakout game tonight. He was in a slump to start the year, but he's starting to play better and come out of it. He just needs to enjoy it and have fun out there.
"If we can get our other guys to score, where teams can't triple-team Mike, that will make a big difference for us."
In addition to putting three in double figures, Curtis Bunek added nine points and point guard Parker Kokowicz seven.
Glen Lake, playing its first game in 16 days, hit 17 of 21 free throws, including 14 of 15 in the fourth quarter. The Chippewas were 3 of 12 at the line and struggled from the field as well.
"We shook off a little holiday rust in that first quarter," Hazelton said. "Defensively, we locked down pretty well. In ugly games, defense can always carry you. Our defense has been solid all year long. If we can continue to build on that, our offense will take care of itself as long as we execute and do things the right way."
Andrew Solberg, Kody Malstrom and Matt Simmons led Manistee with six points apiece.
