TRAVERSE CITY — Advantage, TC West.
The Titans started off a string of three straight days of TC Central-TC West varsity match-ups with an 84-0 wrestling victory over Central.
The two schools meet up today in boys basketball and on Friday in girls basketball.
"We wrestled well," West coach Berard Priante said. "We've been working on some things in the room, something different. Obviously with the number of voids, the match wasn't in question, but you want the kids that are wrestling to use the things you're working on in practice — and they all did that tonight.
"At 119, Tyler (Post) is a freshman, wrestling up a weight. He wrestled really well. In the first period, he was a little weary, but after that he wrestled well. At 152, Gabe (Jasman) is a sophomore. He had a little trouble out of the gate, but then he started working on the things we worked on in practice and turned that match around."
Jasman's win put West up 24-0. Central's Andre Passos had the match's first points with a take down, but Jasman was able to convert a risky reversal, reaching back for a headlock that ended up with a pin with 14 ticks left in the first period.
Post was up 5-0 after one period and 13-2 at the end of the second before getting a pin 34 seconds into the third.
The Titans other wins by pin came from Caleb Kase at 140 (1:07), Ryan Drake at 189 (0:56), James Peck at 285 (0:49), Vincent Priante at 112 (5:13);
West received wins by void from Mike Lambert (135), Sean Clark (145), Jake Draper (160), Josh Wheaton (171), Jonah Tanis (215), Brad Squires (103), Jonah Jasman (125) and J.P. Bullock (130).
Vincent Priante leads the team with a 25-3 record, while Drake and Peck each have 18 victories.
Central, which will be without its best wrestler for the rest of the season due to injury, also had several grapplers out with the flu.
Josiah Lopez-Wild is scheduled for surgery next week for a broken shoulder blade and is expected to miss six months, putting the 189-pounder's return around the start of football season.
Only two of the six Trojans with matches Wednesday wrestled last year.
"They wrestle so much better in practice," Haughn said. "And I'm not talking just about because we're wrestling against us. They move constantly. We just don't have any experience.
"But we're coming on. We've got 30 kids out in middle school. We've got the numbers underneath."
Central is at the eight-team Lakeview Invitational on Saturday before going to Alpena on Wednesday to face the Wildcats and Petoskey.
West is at Saturday's 16-team Sparta Invitational, and also travels to Alpena to face the Northmen and Wildcats.
