Moothart to run in Hershey finals

TRAVERSE CITY — Williamsburg's Isaac Moothart is one of five athletes selected to represent Michigan in the 35th annual Hershey's Track and Field Games in Hershey, Pa.

The North American finals will be Aug. 2-5.

Moothart's 200-meter time of 27.52 at the state meet in Holt on June 29 topped all other runners in the 11-12 age division. This is the first time since 2005 that an athlete from the Traverse City region has been invited to participate in the final.

Moothart is an honor student at Cherryland Middle School in Elk Rapids.

Cherry-Roubaix, state road race set

TRAVERSE CITY — The 5th annual Cherry-Roubaix and Michigan State Road Race Championship take place here Aug. 10-12.

The weekend starts with the Old Mission Peninsula Time Trials on Friday, Aug. 10. A full day of competitive cycling kicks into gear Saturday with the morning Cherry-Roubaix Charity Ride to benefit Munson Healthcare Women's Cancer Fund. That's for cyclists of all levels. Following the benefit ride, the Cherry-Roubaix Old Town Criterium gets underway on a one-mile course through the streets of Traverse City. Additional events, including the Kids Ride and Cruiser Classic, are also scheduled.

On Sunday, Aug. 12, the state championship race will take place on a challenging course across Leelanau County. It begins and ends atop Sugar Loaf Resort in Cedar.

Tour de TART ride set for July 27

TRAVERSE CITY — The 12th annual Tour de TART bicycling event will be held Friday July 27.

The evening ride on the TART and Leelanau trails begins at the old train depot in Traverse City and ends at Marina Park in Suttons Bay. Paving of a 6.5-mile stretch between Lakeview Hills and Revold roads has been finished, meaning the 15-mile Leelanau Trail is now completely paved.

The Tour de TART will start between 4-6:30 p.m. Riders will be able to enjoy snacks along the 19-mile ride and a meal at the Suttons Bay marina park. A bus will return riders back to Traverse City. Bus service begins at 7 p.m. The last bus departs at 9:30 p.m.

Registration is capped at 600. Last year's event sold out. Riders can pre-register at www.traversetrails.org. The cost is $30 for adults and $5 for children through July 19. Thereafter, the cost is $35 for adults and $10 for children. If spots are available, day of ride registration will be from 4-6:30 p.m.

Players needed for Bocce Tourney

TRAVERSE CITY — Players are needed for the 5th annual Bocce Tournament on The Village at Grand Traverse Commons front lawn on Saturday, July 21.

Players can put together a team of four, or sign up to join other single players. The festivities will begin with a family barbeque and potluck picnic at noon, followed by the tournament at 1:30.
