Midwest Jr. League sets format for divisions

Cohos in American Conference's North Division

SYLVANIA, Ohio — The Midwest Junior Hockey League is slated to run with 16 teams in two conferences amongst four divisions this season.

That was one of several issues resolved at a recent league meeting.

The Traverse City Cohos will be in the American Conference's North Division, along with the Ironwood Bears, Rhindelander Street Cats and Soo Firehawks. The Central division is comprised of the Great Lakes Lightning, Hartland Hounds, Michigan Ice Dogs and Tennyson Chevrolet (Brownstown).

The National Conference's East Division is made up of the Dayton Aeros, Erie Blizzard, Lake Erie Steelheads and Northwest Ohio Grrrowl, while the West Division consists of the Blomington Jr. Blaze, Cincinnati Stache, Holland River Bandits and Kankakee Kingfish.

The league will play a 50-game schedule that runs from Sept. 14 to March 17 of 2013, seeing each divisional opponent six times, each opponent from the other division in conference four times and twice against each team in the other conference.

Randy Montrose, owner of the Hartland franchise and part owner of the Cohos, was elected chairman of the board. Tennyson's Keith Lang was appointed executive vice president, Soo Firehawks' Doug Goudreau was named secretary/treasurer and Pay Pylypuik had the interim part of his title removed and was selected president and CEO for the 2012-13 season.

The league's playoff format includes the top two teams from each division qualifying for the postseason, with the first two rounds of the playoffs consisting of best-of-three series and a best-of-five Veterans Memorial Cup to determine the overall champion.

The Veterans Cup champ moves on to play in the Amateur Athletic Union national championship in April.
