Local players lift Michigan to win

YPSILANTI -- Michigan defeated Ohio 13-11 in the first annual Border Battle for high school girls basketball players.

The event was played at Eastern Michigan University with more than 60 college coaches in attendance.

Local players included: Maria Blazejewski (Benzie), Lyndsay LaCourse (St. Francis), Dori Lansbach (TC Central), Rose Savela (Manistee), Ashley Slade (Kingsley), Kerby Tamm (Petoskey), Ashley Bauman (Manistee Catholic) and Laura Boylan (Grayling).

Two teams claim USTA state titles

GRAND BLANC -- Two northern Michigan United State Tennis Association teams won state titles in Grand Blanc this weekend.

The women's 4.0 team went 2-1, but won on a tiebreaker. Team members were of Ruth Smith, Alden; Linda Gillam, Traverse City; Dree Lo, Petoskey, Diane Whorton-Gillespie, Central Lake; Sue Green, Harbor Springs; Laura Chamberlin, Harbor Springs; Sue Turner, Harbor Springs, Tina Blackman, Petoskey; Jennifer Gerling, Alpena; Pam Osterlund, Petoskey; Karen Wright, Reed City; and Jean Bishop, Alpena.

Also going 2-1 and winning on the tiebreaker was the senior men's 3.5 squad. Team members include John Rasmussen, Mike Ziska, John Penfold, Kurt Wheeler, Jeff Knight, Rob Cook, Ron Turner and Mike Mehas based out of Petoskey, Harbor Springs and Cheboygan.

High Bridge Hustle 5K set for Aug. 30

BRETHREN -- The High Bridge Hustle 5K Run/Walk is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 30 at Brethren High School.

The race begins at 9 a.m.

Advance registration by mail is $12 or $15 on race day. A a special entry fee of $10 is being offered to students, involved in high school track programs. Registration fee includes a race day T-shirt.
