ROUNDUP: Gladiators upend East Jordan

EAST JORDAN — St. Francis, idle since last Tuesday, used a strong second quarter Friday to pull away to a 73-48 Lake Michigan Conference basketball win at East Jordan.

The Gladiators (7-1, 5-0) outscored the Red Devils 28-8 in the second stanza to open a 40-17 lead at half.

Sean Sheldon's double-double paced the Gladiators. The 6-8 senior finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Byron Bullough added 14 points and Kody Kleinrichert 12. Damon Sheehy had seven steals.

Isaiah Sladick had nine points and 10 rebounds and Dominique Brogan nine points and 13 rebounds for East Jordan.

Boyne City 69

Grayling 60

Keegan LaBlance scored 28 points as Boyne City claimed a key 69-60 Lake Michigan Conference win at Grayling.

Freshman Corey Redman contributed 17 points and eight rebounds for the Ramblers (6-2, 3-2). Zane Tobin netted 23 points for Grayling.

Elk Rapids 49

Kalkaska 29

Elk Rapids opened a 26-12 lead at half en route to a 49-29 Lake Michigan Conference win over Kalkaska.

Luke Morrison paced the Elks (6-2, 4-1) with 15 points. Philip Hayes added 14. Caleb Gelinas led the Blazers with 10 points.

Charlevoix 75

Harbor Springs 40

Andrew Plude knocked down 26 points as Charlevoix rolled to a 75-40 Lake Michigan Conference win over Harbor Springs.

The Rayders (6-3, 3-2) took charge in the second half after leading by 10, 33-23, at the break. Charlie Hamilton added 14 points. Peter Lauer tossed in 10 for the Rams.

Burt Lake NMCA 83

Northport 28

Four Burt Lake NMCA players reached double figures as the Eagles went to 6-0 with an 83-28 win over Northport.

Aaron Chatfield led the attack with 23 points and 10 assists. David Thompson chipped in 19 points, Paul Chatfield 17 points and 11 rebounds and Stephen Thompson 14 points. Bill Stowe's 13 points paced Northport.

McBain NMC 49

Lake City 39

Senior guard Kyle Benthem nailed scored 15 first-quarter points and went 8-for-10 from the line in the second half to lead visiting McBain Northern Michigan Christian to a 49-39 win over Highland Conference foe Lake City.

Benthem finished with a game-high 23 points for the Comets (6-2, 3-1). Nolan Davenport paced the Trojans (7-3, 2-3) with 11 points, while Drew Marion hit for nine.

Manistee Catholic 43

Baldwin 38

Manistee Catholic Central survived down the stretch to hand Baldwin its first loss of the season and move into a tie for first place in the Western Michigan D.

Zach Bialik scored 18 points for the Sabers (7-3, 6-1 WMD). Alex Hogan added 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists and Ben Feliczak 10 points.

Austin Shivlie had 14 points and seven rebounds as Manton went back over the .500 mark with a 45-21 rout of Highland Conference foe Marion.

Mike Skiver added eight rebounds and six points for the Rangers (5-4, 2-3 HC).

Connor Poduba's 16-point night led Lake Leelanau St. Mary's to a 42-24 non-conference win over Grand Rapids Creative Tech.

Nick Shaffran added 10 points for the Eagles (3-5).

GIRLS HOOPS

St. Francis snapped a 12-12 tie with a 16-4 spurt in the second quarter en route to a 52-34 Lake Michigan Conference win over East Jordan.

Cassie Williams led the Gladiators (8-1, 4-0) with 16 points. Liza Erickson added 12. Jordyn Bacchus led East Jordan with nine points.

Kalkaska 51

Elk Rapids 28

Led by the defense of Tabitha Kibby, Kalkaska shut down Elk Rapids in the second half en route to a 51-28 Lake Michigan Conference victory.

The Blazers led 28-24 at halftime -- and then limited the Elks to just seven second-half points.

Kelli Guy had 19 points, seven rebounds, nine assists and seven steals for Kalkaska (8-1, 4-0 LMC). Sophy Menestrina added 13 points and Jamie Myas seven points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Megan Gregorski had seven points to lead the Elks, all in the first half.

Harbor Springs 62

Elena Ongaro's 18 points helped Harbor Springs notch a 62-46 Lake Michigan Conference win over Charlevoix.

Megan Peters had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Rayders (3-7), while Maddie Boss chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.

Grayling 47

Boyne City 43

A double-double by Jo Hamlin sparked Grayling to a 47-43 Lake Michigan Conference victory over Boyne City.

Hamlin put up 21 points and 14 rebounds for the Vikings (5-6, 1-4 LMC). Rachel Butler's 13 points paced the Ramblers.

Benzie Central 74

Buckley 43

Paige Sauer and Sara Goodchild helped lead Benzie Central to a 74-43 Northwest Conference victory over Buckley.

Sauer had 16 points and knocked down four 3-pointers, while Goodchild added 15 points and two blocks. Jordan Nye chipped in 14 points, 10 steals, seven rebounds and three assists for the Huskies (6-4, 4-2 NWC). Jenna Smeltzer added 11 points and three assists, while Maggie Geetings had 10 points.

Bailee Kuhn led Buckley with 24 points.

Kingsley 50

Leland 44

Emily Fasel scored 11 points to lead Kingsley to a 50-44 Northwest Conference victory over Leland.

McKenzie Meeker chipped in eight points for the Stags.

Elizabeth McKee had 17 points and six steals to pace Leland. Tantzi Snyder and Hanna Schaub added nine points each.

Frankfort 52

Suttons Bay 39

Tami Banktson scored 10 of her game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter as Frankfort pulled away to a 52-39 Northwest Conference win over Suttons Bay.

The Panthers (4-5, 2-2) led by just four entering the final quarter. The game was tied at half.

Banktson also had 13 rebounds in the win. Jess Schaub added 13 points, four steals and three assists travels to Manistee on Tuesday. Miranda Schaub netted 13 points, Elsa Finch nine and Keeley Forrester eight for Suttons Bay (2-8, 1-4).

Glen Lake 70

Taylor Martin's 25-point night led Glen Lake to a 70-29 romp over Mesick in Northwest Conference play.

Scotlyn Brengman added six rebounds and five assists, Ty Fessel had eight points, Maddy Brown chipped in seven points, four assists, four steals and six rebounds, and Sophie Ewing notched seven steals, five rebounds and four assists. Ashley Black and Gabby Kline scored 10 points each for Mesick.

Gaylord St. Mary 89

Karli Jacob's 30 points led Gaylord St. Mary to an 89-53 Ski Valley Conference win over Forest Area.

The Snowbirds (11-0, 9-0) led 54-30 at half. Kari Borowiak contributed 20 points and Christina Smith 16. Emily Gonyer's 18 points topped Forest Area (4-6, 2-4). Marissa Ingersoll added 10 points, six assists and five steals. Lyndsey Czuk had 10 points and five rebounds.

Joburg-Lewiston 49

Pellston 21

Johannesburg-Lewiston more than doubled up Pellston in a Ski Valley Conference matchup, setting up a battle with unbeaten Gaylord St. Mary for first place.

Joburg defeated the Hornets 49-21 to improve to 11-1 overall and 8-1 in SVC competition. Tiffany Nickert and Abby Schlicher had 10 points each for Joburg, with Caitlyn Weaver adding eight points and nine rebounds and Hannah Huff chipping in seven points and nine boards. Nickert grabbed 10 boards.

Bellaire 46

Mancelona 29

Olivia Herring scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds as Bellaire notched a 46-29 Ski Valley Conference win over Mancelona.

Katie Thornton added six points, three assists and seven rebounds for the Eagles (5-5).

Vanessa Batchelor paced Mancelona with 12 points.

Inland Lakes 44

Central Lake 42

Inland Lakes blocked a last-second shot by Central Lake to preserve a 44-42 Ski Valley Conference win.

Morgan Hanel topped the Bulldogs with 16 points. Sheila Crouse netted 23 points and Haley Bearden 11 for Central Lake (5-6, 4-4). Jennifer Corbett grabbed 10 rebounds.

Northport 60

Alba 51

Nina Muller's 21 points powered Northport past Alba 60-51 in a non-league contest.

Chelsie Wack chipped in 11 for the Wildcats, who led 32-24 at half. Tianna Windish netted 19 for Alba.

Lake Leelanau SM 42

Taylor Moore scored 14 points as Lake Leelanau St. Mary posted a 42-36 non-league win over the Traverse City Bulldogs Athletic Association.

HOCKEY

TC Central 7

Gaylord 2

Connor Gartland's hat trick paced Traverse City Central to a 7-2 Big North Conference hockey win at Gaylord on Friday.

Gartland scored his first goal just 57 seconds into the game, converting an assist from Marcus Russell for the Trojans (12-3-1, 7-0).

Russell made it 2-0 just over three minutes later with a short-handed goal. Brady Brantley drew the assist.

Cooper Macdonell closed out the scoring in the first period, tallying with three seconds left on a power play. Keanen Armour and Cam Givens assisted.

Gartland netted the lone second period goal, scoring off assists from Nico Saco and Brady Girard.

He then picked up his hat trick with a goal just 4:20 into the third period. Macdonell and Girard assisted.

Macdonell notched his second goal with Givens assisting. Then Matt Jordan ended the Central scoring with Mark Jordan picking up the assist.

Goalie Bill Vermetten stopped 13 shots.

Gaylord's two goals came in the third period -- one by Nick Shear, the other by Spencer Bajko.

TC West 4

Petoskey 1

Goalie Michael Tilford had a pair of assists as Traverse City West downed Petoskey 4-1.

Trent McDougall had a goal and an assist for the Titans (6-8-1, 3-1-1).

McDougall spotted West a 1-0 first-period lead on an unassisted power-play goal.

Alex Grizzel converted Tyler Thirlby and Clayton Dowlan assists for a 2-0 lead nine minutes into the second, and three minutes later Zak Meyers scored off McDougall and Tilford assists.

Petoskey's Kevin Hansen scored early int he third period, but Jake Saxton's empty-netter with a minute remaining sealed the Titans' win. Tilford and Willie Hanrahan drew helpers.

WRESTLING

Two Trojans place second at Benzie

Traverse City Central had two wrestlers finish second in the Benzie Central JV tournament.

Taking second for the Trojans were Jennifer Long at 152 and Erik Bailey at 171.

SKIING

Central's JV girls win

TC Central's junior varsity girls won the Bellaire Invitational against varsity teams, and the Trojan boys were second.

Central's JV girls A squad won with 52 points, ahead of second-place Glen Lake (81), Grayling (95) and Harrison (129) in the nine-team field.

Mount Pleasant won the 10-team boys' portion of the race with 79 points, with Central's A team second (93.5), followed by Clare (121), Grayling (137) and Glen Lake (185).

Central's Aleksa Szuko was third in giant slalom and fourth in slalom, while Julia Berry was fifth in GS and sixth in slalom.

Susie Ness took fourth in GS and Katy Zimmerman was seventh in slalom.

Other top area slalom finishers were Glen Lake's Kaitlin Guardard (second), Grayling's Emily Wingard (third), Glen Lake's Madison Fink (ninth) and Grayling's Elle Smith (10th).

In GS, Smith won for Grayling, while Glen Lake's Olivia Pierce-Bluhm was eighth, Fink ninth and Katie Pershinske 10th. Wingard was sixth.

For the boys, Central's Tyler Sepanik was second in GS and fifth in slalom.

Glen Lake's Peter Kirby-Miller won slalom, while other top area GS finishers were Central's Kyle Togrul (fourth), Grayling's Curtis Wilson (fifth) and Bellaire's Max Koenig (sixth).

In slalom, Kerby-Miller finished off a sweep by coming out on top, while other top area finishers were Koenig (fourth) and Grayling's Aaron Kiessel (10th).
