Burnett leads Michigan Women’s Open

Georgia native leads by five shots at three-day tourney

THOMPSONVILLE — Katie Burnett's professional career is off to a rousing start.

The Georgia native shot a 6-under 66 on Monday at Crystal Mountain Resort to take the first-round lead at the Michigan Women's Open.

The three-day event concludes on Wednesday.

Burnett, 22, just wrapped up her college career at South Carolina by placing fifth at the NCAA Championships. Monday was her first start as a professional. The 66 tied the course record for women, previously set by Elaine Crosby in 2004 and Lisa Fernandes in 2007.

"I was feeling really good about my game coming into the tournament," Burnett said in a press release. "I've had about a month off since college, so I was ready and definitely wanted to play."

Burnett's round included an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole, five birdies and just one bogey on the par-3 12th hole.

Five shots back is Justina Yu, a former Northwestern golfer. She shot a 71 as the only other player to break par.

Inhong Lim and Jennifer Hong are tied for third with 73. Defending champ Laura Kueny shot a 79.

Traverse City's Hillary Urban shot 88.
