TRAVERSE CITY — Clinging to an 18-12 intermission lead, Traverse City Central came out gunning in the second half for a 52-33 Big North Conference girls basketball victory Thursday over Gaylord.
The Trojans opened the third quarter with a 13-0 run to take a 31-12 lead.
Gaylord responded with a 14-0 run to start the fourth, but it wasn't enough to mount a full comeback.
Katie Knudsen led Central with 18 points, Ali Walker added 16 and Madi Bankey 12.
MacKenzie Edwards paced the Blue Devils (8-8, 4-5 BNC) with 17 points.
Central (8-7, 7-3) is off until Feb. 10, when Ogemaw Heights comes to town for Senior Night.
The Trojans (7-8) won the JV game 33-32 behind 17 points from Callie Bartkowiak, while the freshmen (9-5) won 39-20 as Mikhalia Shepler notched 10 points.
GIRLS HOOPS
TC West 38 Alpena 17
Traverse City West held Alpena to six points in the second half for a 38-17 Big North Conference win.
The Titans (11-5, 8-1 BNC) led 22-11 at the half. Alexis Zywicki had eight points and nine rebounds, Katie Placek had nine points and seven rebounds while Shaina Streeter added eight points.
For Alpena, Christina Kollien had nine points.
The Wildcats won the JV game 34-33 and also took the freshmen contest 46-19. Jodi Turnquist had nine points for the Titans.
TC West hosts Manistee on Monday.
Benzie Central 55 Leland 51
Benzie Central came back for a 55-51 Northwest Conference win over Leland.
The Comets (7-6) led 21-14 and by as many as 12 points, but then got into foul trouble.
For Benzie, Jordan Nye had 20 points while Paige Sauer added 17. Tantzi Snyder had 17 points and 14 rebounds while Liz McKee had 14 points and 11 boards. The Huskies travel Tuesday to Frankfort.
Glen Lake 46 Suttons Bay 29
Taylor Martin's 23 points led Glen Lake to a 46-29 Northwest Conference victory over Suttons Bay.
Martin added six rebounds, three steals and two assists, while Scotlyn Brengman had 12 points and five boards and Taylor Oberson had six points. Sophie Ewing chipped in seven rebounds and four assists, while freshman Jessica Lee put up six rebounds, three steals and three assists in her first game on varsity.
Elsa Finch contributed eight points and seven rebounds to the Suttons Bay effort, while Koraima Guillen had six points and five steals and Jordan Smith grabbed 15 rebounds and scored five points. The Norse (3-10, 2-6 NWC) travel Tuesday to Kingsley.
Glen Lake (9-5, 6-2 NWC) hosts Buckley on Tuesday.
Frankfort 45 Buckley 36
Frankfort held off Buckley to post a 45-36 Northwest Conference win.
Tami Banktson scored 17 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals in the win, with Kristin Smeltzer adding 11 points for the Panthers (5-7, 4-4 NWC).
Bailee Kuhn led the Bears with 19 points and Caelin Runyon added nine. Buckley travels Tuesday to Glen Lake.
Bellaire 40 Forest Area 31
Katie Thornton hit 4-of-5 free throws in the fourth quarter to help Bellaire hold off Forest Area for a 40-31 Ski Valley Conference victory.
Thornton ended the game with eight points and seven rebounds, while Chelsea Bartsch had 16 points and eight rebounds and Madalyn Balon put up seven points and five boards.
The Eagles (8-6, 6-5 SVC) travel Tuesday to Pellston.
Haley Strine had 11 points and eight rebounds for the Warriors (4-9), while Marissa Ingersoll had 10 points.
Forest Area hosts Onaway on Tuesday.
Gaylord St. Mary 63 Pellston 24
Gaylord St. Mary moved to 15-0 on the season with a 63-24 Ski Valley Conference win over Pellston.
The Snowbirds had 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists from Karli Jacob. Kari Borowiak had 13 points and Mary Spyhalski added 10 points.
Sarah Hughley had 12 points for Pellston, which hosts Bellaire on Tuesday.
Central Lake 48 Mancelona 28
Central Lake had two players earn double-doubles in a 48-28 Ski Valley Conference win over Mancelona.
The Trojans (7-8, 6-6 SVC) had 14 points and 10 steals from Lauren Rogers while Jennifer Corbett had 10 points and 15 rebounds. Sheila Crouse added 19 points and six steals.
For Mancelona, McKenzie Wilson had nine points while Vanessa Batchelor had eight points and 10 reboudns.
Central Lake plays Ellsworth on Tuesday.
Ellsworth 52 Lake Leelanau SM 48
Emily Veenstra's 20 points led Ellsworth to a 52-48 non-conference win over Lake Leelanau St. Mary's.
Dana Neumann scored 14 and Kari Steenwyk added 12 for the Lancers, who were only 6-of-15 from the free-throw stripe, but hit five of those down the stretch to hold on.
Rachael Thon topped St. Mary's with 16 points, 10 rebounds and five steals, while Taylor Moore added 10 points and 13 rebounds and Sarah Popp had 12 points.
The Eagles host Brethren on Tuesday.

Kalkaska's JV beat St. Francis 52-29.
Taylor Kibby had 12 points for the Blazers, while Erin McDonnell had eight points for the Glads (6-6).
SKIING
Manistee/SF boys win LMC meet
The Manistee/St. Francis boys skied to first at the Lake Michigan Conference meet at Crystal Mountain.
In the giant slalom, Manistee/SF took the top four spots with Cole McCardel (39.2), Steven Siddall (39.32), Jeff Summers (40.57) and Tyler Hansen (41.04). Siddall won the slalom (50.59), McCardel was second (51.96), Hansen was third (55.07) and Summers was sixth (57.21).
In the girls meet, Andrea Paine was second in the slalom (59.08) and Lauren Hansen was seventh (1:01.95). Paine was fourth in the GS (43.44), Hansen was 11th (45.35), Krissi Dressler was 13th (45.51) and Syriah Dobis was 19th (47.44).

Lucas Rowe had 16 points for the Trojans (10-3) while Cole Walker added 13 points.
